Interesting ammo cartridge forms and construction

I posted about this in another forum.

I'll just C&P...

First picture, first and third cartridges appear to be 7.5x55 Swiss rounds (they could also easily be 7.62x51). The plastic rounds were short-range training/gallery rounds. Essentially the neck would snap at the bullet portion of the case.

The middle round I believe is a 7.62x51 NATO round. It appears to be pelletized propellant. I know a number of nations in Europe experimented with pelletized ammunition that could be loaded in the case earlier in the forming process and more easily than loose powder. The filler is interesting, though. I need to do some reading in my Jean Huon book. (edit in: still need to do that).

Second picture first cartridge sure looks like a .455 Webley to me.

And yeah, most of those are modern cartridges.

Most of the other cartridges seem to be various flavors of 9mm.

You can tell, though, that a lot of them are European in origen because of the Berdan priming.

Someone identified the last one (with the red plastic case) as a Speer plastic training round. I'm not 100% sure that it is, but it is the same concept. I believe that that is a rubber bullet, though, not a plastic bullet of the type that Speer offered.

The three weird rifle cartridges in the next to last set appear to be a 7.62x51, and I don't know about the other two. The last one is weird, because it has the multi-ball round, so it has a VERY long neck.

The one in the middle looks like a 5.56x45 flechette round, but it's difficult because the cartridges in each group don't appear to be realistically scaled to each other.

The set above that appears to be a Glaser .38 Special or .357 Magnum, and the bottlenecked round someone identified as a British development, the .224 Boz.

It would have been nice had the photographer added some information about the cartridges.

cartridge case trimming

I'll just first and right up front tell you that I am not a big Lee fan, using only a few or their products while avoiding most of them.

Probably an Ol'Coot thing.

As Streach indicates, I can't see any way or reason that your cases would be camfered on a case neck trimmer.

However, what I suspect is happening given that you have used wet/dry sand paper to clean the shaft is -------------- the brass is galing the steel shaft and the build up is what is causing the problem on your case necks.

I have outside turned a lot of .308 brass, necked to .243, and time after time I have needed to clean the brass off the pilot shaft because it started to damage the inside of the case necks. I cleaned the pilot shaft with a piece of #400 or 600 whet and dry paper placed around the pilot shaft as I rapidly cranked the shaft.

I have tried a number of things to solve this and nothing to this point has been completely sucessful.

My outside neck turner is a Forster.

I have also over the years, trimmed many cases to length, in some cases where I was forming brass to another caliber this operation taking a lot of trimming and have never had the problem you speak of. This is with an old RCBS hand turn clase length trimmer.

RCBS makes a much newer trimmer which also has an outside neck turner attachment, but what I have still works, so will probably not replace it any time soon.

Opinions please; have mold, now I need a cartridge and rifle!

I got a pretty good deal on a NOE 4 cavity 225 55gr FN. I initially thought I would use this gas checked in my AR15, but I'm having second thoughts as to that working in a gas gun. Anybody use this in an AR? If not, what cartridge and model rifle would you suggest for this bullet. I'm thinking 22 Hornet, 218 Bee. What other cartridges use .224-.225 and 55gr successfully?

Works great in my AR. IMR4064 is showing progress for an accuracy load and as yet I have not seen any leading.

I know this answer ! You get an ol' rattle trap Carcano and a bbl blank and set it up in 224 Weatherby Varmit Master.
