"Rebarrel Rem 700"

If you're going to finish it yourself, they give you a pretty good starting point. If a gunsmith is going to finish it, it could actually cost you more. The barrel maker is going to charge you to short chamber it, then the gunsmith is going to have to go through the process of getting it set up and finish chambering it, so it does not really save him any time.

I haven't tried a shallow chamber but I have had one deep chambered, but It still cost me about the same to have it installed because most of the cost is the labor involved in setting the barrel up in the lathe to do any of the work.

If it's a standard barrel swap, with the factory threads and you have the replacement barrel threaded, and plan on using a hand reamer to finish the chamber, a shallow chamber might save you a little.

Personally, I prefer to have the action blue printed and custom chambers on 700's so the all the work has to be by the gunsmith doing the work

Turkish Mauser rebarrel question

I have a K-Kale 1940 Turkish Mauser that I plan to rebarrel. I can't decide what chambering I want. As tis rifle is a large ring, small shank format, that limits the pre-chambered barrels I can choose from. I have narrowed my choices to 6.5x55 Swede, .257 Roberts, and 7x57. This would be a dedicated cast gun. Of those three, what would you choose?
I am partial to larger calibers, so I would go with the 7x57. IMHO the larger caliber gives you more options for loading down or loading hot to accomplish different tasks.
