I had a boss at Aberdeen Proving Ground who ran the high impulse shotgun test that made him black and blue. It did not heel and about four months later he was diagnosed with cancer in that area and died a few months later. We had an Industrial Hygiene Specialist assigned to us ( least I think that was what he called himself) and I remember him saying the rule of thumb is if you first are exposed to something and you sneeze, cough it will in all probability not be good for you in the long run. Thus if you are shooting something hard enough to give you neck pain and headaches upon firing it cannot be good for you either.
I had a 458 Mag. Never shot it with full house loads but I dumped it. I had a 300 H&H Sporter that was not pleasant to shoot and dumped it. Had a 338 Mag and never shot it. When I have to shoot medium/heavy recoil guns now I use a Kick Killer recoil pad on the bench. Oh yeah I had a Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 Mag let a guy shoot it and it dislocated his thumb. Knew other guys that shot one from him and wound up in ER getting head stitched up, dumped it too. Now I have a Ruger Redhawk which is far more pleasant and kept it.
Had politicians that gave me heart burn and dumped them too ! ! ! ! ! It just doesn't pay to keep doing something that give secondary effects that cause pain. For instance my father in law hated one politician so bad his doctor ordered him to not watch the news as he had a heart condition and he died five years ago.

I can shoot large, powerful cartridges. If someone at the range has a heavy recoiler and offers to let me shoot it, I will. I always have, anyway. But that's for my own curiosity and satisfaction. Really though, a stout 180gr bullet load in 30-06 is about all I need, and even then, not on any kind of a regular basis. I've got a little headache before after taking the 30-06, 35 Remington, and another rifle to the range to shoot 20 loads with each. I think the 458 Lott belongs to a few limited, dangerous African game. It's too big for quail. I think you did good though for wondering about it and trying it out enough to become expert with it. I have zero desire to do anything with that cartridge (or anything similar to it, to include the Weatherbys) except read about it. Even then, the story had better be good. (((
