Just won this on GB today. PICS. Created another project lol.

Just won this on GB today. PICS. Created another project lol. I was the only bidder and won this Uberti 1858 Remington with conversion cylinder on GB today for $300.00 and $20.00 shipping. $320.00 total. It had been originally auction listed starting at $375.00 but the dealer selling it on consignment dropped the price to $300.00 and I jumped on it immediately. I may have just gotten lucky and others didn't realize it had been price dropped.

Haven't even paid for it yet and naturally it hasn't been shipped to me yet. The nice thing is the dealer (as per NFA law) agreed to ship the revolver and cylinder separately and in separate boxes, so he can ship it to me directly and save me the hassle of driving to my dealer's and paying for a transfer.

I figure that's a real good deal since just blue conversion cylinders by themselves for the Uberti Remy go for about $225.00 or so regularly on GB. So figuring $225.00 cost for a conversion cylinder (and this one is fluted!), that means I got the Uberti (minus BP percussion cylinder) for only $75.00! (Not including the $20.00 Shipping). How could I go wrong?

Whoever originally owned it, had done a bad antiquing job on it with a chemical (naval jelly?) to remove the blue finish on the revolver and conversion cylinder. I can tell from the pics that whatever chemical was used very very slightly etched the metal a tiny bit. But not to worry, I know that I can buff that right out using my buffing wheel (and dremel for the small areas) and some medium and extra fine rouge that I recently bought to do a buff job on my snubby barrel S&W 1917 project I completed recently.

Obviously the condition of its finish is why I was the only bidder and got it for such a good price. Plus the dealer selling it, lowering the price in the last few hours of the auction helped too. To my good fortune others either did not catch the lowered price, or else they didn't like the removed finish and didn't realize what a jewel in the rough it was, woo hoo!

Once I get the Uberti Remy mirror polished to where I can easily see my teeth in it, then I'll reblue it and it will look like new. Maybe more highly polished than new. Not sure why the owner did such a bad job on antiquing it. The dealer who was selling it on consignment said he didn't know what chemical was used nor why the original owner did such a bad antiquing job on it, nor did he know anything about it other than the owner wanted him to sell it on consignment for him. Dealer did say the bore was in good shape. Anyway, it's mine now and I'm very happy with what I paid for it.

Naturally it looks bad right now, but that's all just easily buffed out very slight chemical etching and a little surface rust, but not too bad. The good thing is it's a steel frame Uberti and you won't recognize it when I get through with it. I had a Pietta Remy in stainless with a stainless conversion cylinder and the same length barrel, but I sold it because I wasn't nuts about the adjustable target sights it had. To me, it took away from the authentic look of the gun, so I sold it to a shooting buddy of mine who loves it. I just prefer the non adjustable sights on the 1858 Remy, unless it's the 18 inch barrel 1866 Remy revolving carbine. Then I want the adjustable sights. I really like the flutes on this .45 Colt (black powder only cartridge) conversion cylinder. Haven't seen another conversion cylinder with flutes like this for the Remy. Anyone know who makes this conversion cylinder?

Now I just need to pick up an Uberti percussion cylinder for it too, so I can shoot either percussion or BP filled cartridges in the conversion cylinder.
Best of both worlds.

Anyway, here's the "before" pics of what it looks like right now from the auction pics. I'll post the "after" pics later on when I get it buffed out and re-blued.

I think it was a GREAT deal. Whatcha think guys?

Had a squib today, not sure what caused it

I had a squib load in my Mosin just now. I'm always careful with my powder charges so I doubt it was an undercharged case. I just switched to a Lee turret and I use the double disk kit, bit since I still check each round I don't think that matters a whole lot.

I don't have any pics but the case looked fine on inspection and the primer was struck fully. You wouldn't be able to tell it was a squib just by looking at the case itself, minus the fact that there was unburned powder still in it.

My friend was the one shooting it and he said the trigger clicked and powder granules came out everywhere. I noticed a good amount on the shooting table. The power was Win 748 and I throw between 44 and 45 grains. Not sure what the actual charge is offhand but the powder throw is very accurate.

Now for the interesting part. There was a mass of caked together powder which was just large enough to be stuck in the case when I tried to shake it out. Also, the powder had its typical grey/black color along with some yellow thrown in, which I have never seen before.

My AR was using the same powder and fired just fine, and we shot about ten rounds through the Mosin before the squib happened.

I can't think of what the cause may have been. My guess would be the temperature/humidity caused the powder to degrade but I can't imagine that would happen unless the situation was severe.

The humidity was pretty high since we're expecting a thunderstorm tonight, and the temperature was in the low 80s.

Any thoughts from more experienced loaders out there?

Back to the range today....

Took the Trapdoor with the corrected front sight. POI is much closer now.

The rifle shot real well. Almost all inside two inches at forty yards. I am still getting used to it. I am also very happy with my loads for the rifle. Very consistent.

More than I can say for the .357s I loaded. These round are so off I can hear the difference. I couldn't hit anything with them. I think I may be having charge consistency problems. These rounds were loaded with a flask and now I have that Redding loader so I hope to get better consistency in the next batch.

Took the Henry Big Boy out for the first time. After shooting the trapdoor with 70 grains of 777, the .357 Henry which is actually heavier than the trapdoor is like a popgun. I do like it though. Action is smooth, Had to tap the front sight a bit to get POI closer. About six inches left at 40 yards. The front sight was obviously installed incorrectly. Perhaps they do that so that the shooter will be compelled to set it to his liking.

Now I am going to go and weigh the rifles to make sure I am telling the truth about the Henry being heavier that the Carbine.

shot my first CMP match today.

shot my first CMP match today. it was loads of fun. I probably should have sighted in my M1 ahead of time though... 5 sighters just don't cut it. it was a small shoot, there is such a small group around here that they do all bolt and semi US service arms at once so I was a little concerned since more than half the other guys were using 1903A3s.

I was using my Springfield CMP service grade M1 which I haven't even fired except to perform a function test. took me most of the first battery to get dialed in but I finished 3rd place. there was less than a dozen shooters total but I'm content to brag about it for a while. as for my personal standards I feel like I did horribly. it may have been me, or the rifle or a combination of the two but something just didn't measure up with the size of groups I was getting. I doubt I'll shoot much more with this rifle... maybe one day I'll get a 1917 or 1903A3 and I'll see about competing with them but I think I'll just let my old springfield M1 be a safe queen for a while.

On the hunt today.

For the first time in a couple of years the wife and I are going to a gun show today. I will be interested to see what's out there.
I'm not in the need for any guns, but will have my eye out for 9mm brass, and possibly some M&P mags.
There will also be a stop by the scrap yard to investigate the lead dumpster. Then it's off to the flea markets. Maybe I'll come across some pewter or tin. I've never gone to a gun show as a caster, this should be interesting, maybe I'll find some molds???

Will report back tonight.

Shot my first Keith boolits today

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

I had 30 that passed inspection. So I loaded 6 each with 18, 18.5, 19, 19.5, and 20 grains of 2400. I shot 5 shot groups and 1 at a water filled cranberry juice bottle from 20 yards. There was a 25 gusting to what ever the heck MPH crosswind. Not the best conditions for testing. The 19.5 grain load did the best, just under 4". Not bad for me and the conditions. Now I need to cast some more and fine tune the load. The most impressive thing was the way they exploded the bottles. Cranberry juice bottles are tougher than milk jugs. Other loads just leave entrance and exit holes. Thanks for all the help and advice.

Today I made my first batch of Ben's Red.....

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

And everything was going smoothly until I added the transmission fluid witch ended up being 10% instead of 5%. So I continued and added approx. another 10% Bee's wax before finishing up with the 5% STP. I heated and mixed everything very well as I added each different ingredient and it did set up in a fairly short period of time outside at 48 degrees. I have it in the freezer now and it looks a bit more like Ben's Purple or Maroon than Ben's Red. I also substituted Ford Mercon Tranny fluid because that is what I had. Hopefully it will be at least close to Ben's Red in performance. Is it possible to reheat the batch and try and improve on it once it has cooled? I still have a bit of Lucas red-n-tacky I could add if it is to hard to pan lube with.

Smokepole50

My guess it will be softer due to the additional ATF. It can be remelted and modified. The Ford fluid must have contributed the darker color, mine is a light pastel Red using the Dexron fluid. If I ever need to make another batch, I made a Large one, I will add some red candle dye.
Well I cut it up today in bars and it is firm and slightly tacky but it does not have the smooth sides at the cuts like I see with Ben's pictures. I did not filter the lube when I pore it into the pan, is this important? I did notice some very small pieces of un-dissolved red-n-tacky in the mix, do these need to be filtered out?
they will mix in with each re-melting.
if you followed my directions where you melt the grease first you don't have that issue.
oh dexron atf contains mercon anyway so no big deal it's the type f that has the friction adders.
it's all an educated guess,,,, till the trigger is pulled.

the more i find out about shootin boolits, the more it contradicts everything i ever learned about shooting jaxketed.

Yes I saw your directions last night after I had already made the batch, I will try that next time. I think I will need to make the next batch outside if I get the red-n-tacky that hot as the stove exhaust fan barely kept up with the bee's wax and grease mixture smoke.

Is the lube normally tacky on the sides when it is cut into bars? Maybe I need to do a remelt of the whole batch and add some additional bee's wax behond what I have already added to try and correct my mistake. If so, should I also add in a bit more JPW to the mix as well? My gut feeling tells me it is about right comparing it to the tackiness of the BLUE lubes I have seen on store bought boolits. As well, it seems to be about right for cookie cutter type lube but I have yet to do any of this so I am just guessing.

First time at the range with my Stevens 320.
No real history with shotguns. Just small caliber rifles and handguns.

Well....
Tucked her in tight, racked the pump and lit a slug off.

.32 Caliber day at the range today :)

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

Well went to the range today, broke out the 686, 610 and my grandpa's 32-20, .32 SWL and little .32 acp German Mauser

The little .32 ACP I had 3 rounds to try from the left,
the 60g Hornady XTP sized .311 with 2.2 grs of WW231 seated deep .915
the 71g REM FMJ sized .312 with 2.2grs of WW231 seated .960
the RCBS .32-77gr weight 79grs with 1.9 grs of WW231 seated very deep .905 (to cycle).
BEST thing all three rounds cycled great and I had no failures to feed and no jams the German Mausers are cool.

The next one is my 32-20 and .32 SWL both AA#5 4.6 and 3.5 respectiviely with the RCBS 32-098-SWC what a great litte bullet. The AA#5 powder had a bit of unbrunt powder even with a lite charge, gonna which to WW231 next time.

That's fantastic. If I was to shoot handguns then .32 would be my choice. Cheap to run, mild to shoot.
Cheers from New Zealand

I've HAD IT with snow and winter, I'd settle for for 65-70 and sunny, thanks. Kinda feels like the winter that won't die! Hang in there Jeff, from what 'they' say, it's supposed to be in the low 50's (!!!) by the end of the week, and hopefully it will finally all melt, at least down here by the cities. We'll see, but it is promising. I am looking to get my new outdoor smelter going outside in the back yard, but I refuse to do it in the snow.

UPS brought my first reloader today

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

First I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for the informative posts, kindly pm's and genial atmosphere of the forum. Well the big brown truck came today so me and the boys took a break from house building and I let them open the box. Over the past couple of weeks we have been shooting and talking alot about gun safety. They also have been helping me sort wheel wts Ive been picking up- Charlie my 7 y/o has quite a good ear for checking them. We also have been going over the anatomy of a cartridge and the functions of the parts.

I've told them what the lead was for and explained that we would soon be making bullets and reloading ammunition. Now they didnt know what all was in the box but they knew the stuff meant we' d be doing something. Generally as long as we are doing something together then they like whatever it is just fine.

Pard, you are doing it right. you and your sons are gonna have a lot of fun loading and shooting together.
Great to see the young ones smiling with reloading equipment in there hands! That reminds me of me and my pop when I was just a young lad. Don't let it fade away if ya can help it.
When my oldest was about 3 I took him to the hardware store with me to pick up some things. A gray haired fellow asked me, "Is he a good helper?". To which I replied " Well, he wants to help and trys". The fellow smiled and said, "I had sons, and when they were too little to do much they wanted nothing more than to be a help. When they got big enough to be actually helpful, they wanted nothing more than to find somewhere else to be". I know what's coming. It's been that way since the dawn of man I imagine. I guess all I can do is just try to do the best I can to teach them about God, instill a good work ethic, and how to take care of themselves and the family they'll hopefully someday have - while I still hold some sway over them. I guess that's what being a Dad is - doing the best you can while you are able.

Congratulations! My boy is 8 months and he gets so excited when my wife comes out to the workshop for a visit. I can't wait till I can teach him what I'm doing. I remember my first attempts at doing what my Daddy did. I got hold of some finishing nails and found some bark that I peeled off a rotted log. My dad came home to find me extremely frustrated that I wasn't having any luck on my project! My nails wouldn't hold. The wood was always splitting! That's when he got out some real boards and gave me my first hammer. Good memories!

A great father you are. Nothing better you can do the instill as many hobbies as you can while they're young.
That is an awesome pic phsychic! Start em young and they will be hooked for life!

You are one fine Dad!

Fine looking boys, I know they will be glad to help reload some ammo. Shooting is one of my 3 girls favorite things to do, We shoot reclaimed golf balls, They have alot of fun watching them bounce away.
No, not the best or the worst. Just trying to keep it between the ditches.

@ USMC87 - I've never heard of shooting golf balls. What do you shoot 'em with and how many "lickens before they quit tickin'"? But most importantly, how do they taste?

Charlie (7) is the big guy, he will do just about anything for you.... well except stay clean Alex (6) he too will do just about anything, but usually only under "threat of pain". Last spring I gave each of the boys enough sweet corn seed to hand plant 3 - 80' rows. Charlie zipped right along while Alex salted the seeds with his tears claiming torture all the while. He got to learn a lesson that day about the difference in what you want to do and what you have to do. This year I had em split up about 500 onions to plant - Much less fuss, they do sure like to see the stuff grow.

That's great, psychicrhino, my boy loves to help me (if it's something he wants to do), and my little girl would love to, but she needs some time to grow yet. BUT, even at less than 2 she helps pick up brass!

My daughter helped me by positioning subcaliber bullets for seating. She was three or four at the time and kept reminding me not to pinch her fingers. I never did, just my own. She is grown now and still remembers helping me and the tall bar stool she used to help me with.

Take care

Ordered some goodies today

I finally had a chance to order some goodies today...now I just have to wait for who knows how long for them to come.

I took the jump I've been planning for quite some time and ordered an RCBS LAM2 and a .356 sizer. I also ordered a Lee Pro Auto Disk and the micrometer adjustable charge bar (I realized the charging part of reloading is my slowest and hopefully the auto disk will help in that area).

I did some casting a while back, but only did about 60 from each of my two molds because both were casting too large to chamber in my guns. Now that I'll have a lube sizer at some point I'll be able to continue those efforts.

I pretty much exhausted my fun money for a few weeks so I'll have to wait a bit more before I can order some punches from the perfessor and the other sizer die that I need. That should be fine though...the lam2 and the auto disk are both on back order and it looks likes Grafs is running a few weeks back on order fulfillment...chances are I'll be able to order and receive the punches before I actually get the lube sizer. I'm perfectly okay with all of it though...I've got enough fmj rounds made up to last me for a few months.
