Long range hunting

Off-hand standing, my personal longest shot is 320 yards.
COULD fit that standard longer?? Certainly possible......BUT

To me, that is match shooting, or a prayer for hunting. No way I would take the shot while hunting. That means(again to me) that I didn't "Hunt" very well, and couldn't get close enough to take a reasonable shot.

Not a condescending statement to others, just my take on things.

whent to the range

If you haven't, clean the barrel and trigger. Check the torque on the action screws, not too tight-50 INCH pounds front and 30 or so rear. Tighten both a little at a time. The final snug should be on the front screw first..

Your groups will shrink, considerably from that one..

How far to your Outdoor Range ?

The best outdoor range for me is 43 miles door-to-door. They're cheap, I can take a lane all day long for like $4. Plus, they don't harass me about NFA stuff. Plus plus, I never leave there with less than a couple thousand cases to reload.

Other than that there's another outdoor range less than 10 minutes away in city traffic, but they pester me and try to "educate" me on NFA law. Problem is they're wrong about what they're saying 90% of of time and it makes shooting much less of a pleasant experience. Because of that I usually just make the drive or shoot indoors.

HK P2000SK .40 range report

This gun controls recoil very well for a small forty, much better than the Glock 27, though the baby Glock has less height making it fit in a pocket better. And of course the Glock is a whale of a lot cheaper.

Unlike the USP, the manual says no +P ammo; ergo the 40 is the better way to go in this model.

Function was flawless with Remington 165 fmj and Federal white box 180 fmj. The gun is very accurate and shoots more like a fullsize than a subcompact. How accurate? Accurate enough to use the numbers for targets. I love the heck out of it. Typically German outstanding fit and finish. Trigger both da and sa were accurate and controllable. Other than the aforementioned height my only complaint was hot brass in my collar and sandals. I was shooting at an indoor range, perhaps it was the confines. 9 round mags. Damn fine weapon all in all. I'm well pleased with my purchase.

Stray Bullets From Range Hit Home

The Caldwell family of Carrollton, GA was awarded a judgment against Advanced Bullets Gun Range after claiming that over a ten year period 27 stray bullets hit their home. Apparently the Jury agreed awarding the family $175,000 the Judge also ordered the range closed until the NRA can conduct a safety review and make recommendations to the court. The family reports that they spoke to the range owners, but the problem continued.

So, sort of hard to believe this problem could continue without the range owners taking some action. I’m curious what the specifics are and if members/customer were violating some procedure that contributed to the problem. Either way I guess it shows the need for responsible range management, liability insurance and a good backstop. Also, it is nice to see the NRA getting a little good press, but the negative image the range appears to be presenting probably outweighs that.

Maximum "combat" range of a Snub Nose .38 Special?

Kraigwy shoots his .38 snub out to 100 yards, when he practices. Notice that's "Shoots", doesn't say "Hits".

But yes I do weird things with my 642, I also practice Bullseye with my 642, but I don't do well.

Also practice bowling pins, steel, and everything else I can safely shoot at. Again I don't do that well,

BUT it gives me confidence in that little revolver, I believe it makes me a better shooter at up close and personal distances.

I wouldn't call that "combat effective", I call that target practice.

One thing one must consider, the farther away you are, the harder to justify self defense.

Back when metallic pistol silhouette first showed up in the Anchorage area, I shot it with my 4 in Model 28, not because its the best gun for hitting those sheep at 200 yards, but it was my service revolver, I think it made me a better shooter at ranges I would need to use it.

But if something came up where I'd need to shoot 200 yards, I had a sniper rifle in the trunk of my patrol car.

I can't hit much at 100 yards with my 642, but I'm convinced if needed I could discourage bad behavior at that distance.

But that isn't self defense range. The only time I shot at anything legit at that range (actually a bit farther) was when I saw a stray dog harassing my horses. Didn't hit him, but got close enough to put him in over drive and out of my pasture.

As mentioned it builds confidence in my defense revolver, but it also shows limitations. I would NEVER hunt with it at distance, nor would I attempt any self defense at extended ranges.

Kind of difficult to show you were in fear of your life if the bandit is 100 yards away. At that distance I could be in the truck and in the next county before he got close enough to be a bother.

1200 Yard Long Range Match & Tactical Rifle/Pistol Match

REGISTRATION LINK

We have had a couple spots open up on the long range match. IM or Email me if you would like to get in on the match.

We are constructing a "shoot house" for the 1st stage of Carbine/ Pistol match. Something along the lines of a 24x40 structure that will be played out as a hostage rescue scenario. The 2nd part of the match will be a 3/8 mile long course filled with reactive steel set up in a winding creek bottom. I hope to have pics up shortly.

Range Lead?

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

steve4102 is offline Boolit Mold Join DateFeb 2011Posts4

I have an opportunity to purchase some lead ingots made from "range Lead". I know this is not exact and almost impossible to know for sure, But.

What would be a good guess as to the Hardness (BHN) of range lead from an indoor range?

Thanks
Steve

That's all from my clubs indoor range. It averages about 12-14 BHN, needs some tin added for good fill-out. That's just half of what was in that backstop.

Here's some 40's made from it.

If the price is right Id say get some. It beats having to dig it out of the dirt pile at my range!
I use range scrap almost exclusively for all my pistols. Works great in my 9mm, 40, 45acp, and my 45 colt. I can't beat the price, free. Just gotta dig it up and process it.
I've used it "as is" for 38 Special and 45 ACP loads. As Snuffy suggests, you might need some tin, but try it "as is" and see how ductile or how well it fills out your molds before that expense.
Keep your powder dry,

Scharf

Range scrap is my primary source as well. I buy superhard from rotometals to sweeten the alloy with antimony a bit but it doesn't need much.
My scrap ranges from 12 to 13 one day out of the mold up to 22 aged for a month. Part of this depends on how I separate prior to smelting.
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
I wish I had a way to test the lead from my range. I have to assume that it would be consistent from any range so I just go with that. I mix mine with some tin when I have it and some wheel weight lead.

A question for the experts (obviously not me) - would water dropping also increase the hardness and I have read a little about heat treating. Don't want to hijack the thread but if the OP is concerned about hardness it might be helpful to know.

My indoor trap lead measured by my Lee hardness tester is usually 8-9 BHN. Its a mix of 22 LR, cast, plated, and FMJ bullets. A big user is law enforcement so FMJ is probably the majority. Shotguns aren't allowed so it probably mostly lead+tin

Back to the range today....

Took the Trapdoor with the corrected front sight. POI is much closer now.

The rifle shot real well. Almost all inside two inches at forty yards. I am still getting used to it. I am also very happy with my loads for the rifle. Very consistent.

More than I can say for the .357s I loaded. These round are so off I can hear the difference. I couldn't hit anything with them. I think I may be having charge consistency problems. These rounds were loaded with a flask and now I have that Redding loader so I hope to get better consistency in the next batch.

Took the Henry Big Boy out for the first time. After shooting the trapdoor with 70 grains of 777, the .357 Henry which is actually heavier than the trapdoor is like a popgun. I do like it though. Action is smooth, Had to tap the front sight a bit to get POI closer. About six inches left at 40 yards. The front sight was obviously installed incorrectly. Perhaps they do that so that the shooter will be compelled to set it to his liking.

Now I am going to go and weigh the rifles to make sure I am telling the truth about the Henry being heavier that the Carbine.

CMP M1 Range Report... finally

CMP M1 Range Report... finally hello all,
I've had a springfield M1 garand service grade since February but I've been waiting on M2 ball to actually take it out. the ammo arrived a couple weeks back but so far all I've done is put a single clip through it as a function test.

well today for reasons still unknown to me I decided I'd load it up and go to the local CMP shoot. as we have a smaller group than most all US service rifles compete side by side which had me nervous since there were more 1903A3s than M1s. in retrospect I probably should have zeroed it long before I attempted to compete with it... 5 sighters just wasn't enough. I spent most of the first battery trying to get it on point. however by the end of the match I was holding my own with many of the more seasoned competitors. there was less than a dozen shooters but I still managed to take home the bronze...

3rd place aint bad for the first time actually shooting.

the groups were not great... not sure if that was a reflection on me or the rifle but either way... I'm satisfied with it's reliability and it's accurate enough for deer though I doubt I'd ever take it hunting.

Good days at the Range!

I've had many good days at the local range, but my latest one on June 13, was pretty nice.

My re-barreled Rem 700, 243 hadn't shot as well as hoped, but I decided to try some Nosler 80 grain Varmint bullets and they grouped 0.4" at 100 yards, even with some shifty winds.

The Tikka T3, .243 Lite didn't like that load as well, but shot 0.7".

The Tikka 595, .223 continued to impress me, shooting Accurate 2230, 25 grain load, 50 Grain Hornady SP SX; making a nice 0.3" group.

Then, it was off to the handgun range. Time was getting tight, but I managed to shoot three handguns, .22LR Bersa, steel model; a Stainless Ruger MKII with Bushnell mini red dot, and a Colt Gold Cup 70 series, .45. Shooting two-handed, I managed to keep most rounds within the scoring rings of a 50-foot NRA target, despite shooting high with a light target load in the .45. The factory hardball rounds were mostly in the 3" black.

The Ruger MK II shoots lights-out with that red dot. I think all the shots were in the black.

Not having shot the handguns for a while, it was great to do as well. All in all, a good range day.

Have you had a good range day lately???

CMP Garand Range Report

Finally got a chance to get to the gun club with my newest purchase. I got my Winchester built M1 Garand 2 weeks ago and have been itching to get it out to the range ever since. Well the rain finally stopped for a while today so I got out there for a bit. Didn't put a lot of rounds through it, 27 in total but that's enough for me to feel it out. Started out at 25yds since I had no idea where it was going to be hitting, put 3 rounds down range and it was dead center so I decided to push the target out to 100yds. I fired 8 rounds off the bench to get it zeroed in then another 8 standing unsupported and 8 more sitting. All in all I'm pretty happy with the way this rifle shoots especially considering it's surplus ammo, once I start working up handloads those groups should shrink dramatically. I had a great time with the rifle and had the range not been so busy I probably would have shot up all 200rds of M2 ball that I bought with the rifle. My only issue is that the reproduction enbloc clips I bought with the rifle don't clear the action when ejected, not sure if this a rifle or clip issue so I need to research that a bit.

Those shots in the 7 & 8 rings were fired off hand, need to get used to the weight of this rifle I guess and come down to rest more when shooting off hand.

Stu

First day at the range with the new P-09

It was a brisk 100 degrees at 9AM, with a nice breeze. Beautiful spring day in Arizona.

I was out with my brand new CZ P-09, having arrived yesterday. I wasn't going to wait too long before breaking it in, so after a clean and oil, out we went. I took the widest variety of ammo I could get, but my biggest problem...factory loads. I've reloaded for so long that i had to dig up some older factory ammo to try out, and realized I need some more 9mm defensive factory JHP loads. Oops.

I started off with 10 rounds of my old standby carry load, the Remington standard velocity 115 gr JHP. BTW, yes, it does have a good street record, according to Evan Marshall.

Not bad for very first rounds ever fired through this gun. Recoil was LIGHT, and very manageable.

One interesting surprise, the 135 grain Hydrashoks did well,

But the Remington 115gr JHP reloads I made up a few years ago worked quite well,

She ate everything I fed her without a burble until...

Yes, Virginia, there is an "until"...the home cast lead. The round was too long and fat in the ogive to properly chamber, and twice hung up on feeding. This is the 125 grain Lee single lube groove bullet, so I will try the narrower 124 grain Tumble Lube and see if that works better. I loaded the offending rounds in the Phantom to make sure it was the gun, and it was - worked perfectly in the Phantom. It's just that P-09 chamber is cut shorter so as to say no to .356 cast lead. Oops. Anything else, factory, plated or jacketed bullet reloads, all of those fed perfectly. I just have to play with my lead load to make it work right.

Berrys 115gr HBRN-TP loads, perfect feed and function. Need more of these.

Just got back from the range

Took along five tools.

New Henry in .357 and a Cattleman also in .357. Unfortunately I neglected to take along any .357 ammunition so it was a little embarrassing.

I had loaded some .45LC for a comparison of 777 and Pyrodex. The platform was the Rossi M92 Carbine. Fun to shoot. I noted about 70 fps more with 777 than with Pyrodex from that rifle. About 1160 as compared with 1230. The load was 27 grains by volume from a Redding powder measure. Used a card and then cornmeal for filler. I sure do like that power measure for cartridges.

Also took along the trapdoor carbine with the new sight. Perhaps you recall I made a new sight for it because the first one was too short. This one is too tall which I was pretty sure would be the case. I'll take it down a bit and then smooth it up at the range the next time out.

Took the new Sharps along as well. Very interesting comparison with the trapdoor. I was using a 405 RNFP from a Lee mold. That was backed up by 70 grains of 777. Both rifles shot between 1250 and 1300 fps. I imagine that I can hold a closer group with the Sharps. No surprise since the Trapdoor is 130years old. The Sharps sight is a little more user friendly.

I did learn something about the Sharps action. It is not a good idea to close the breach with the hammer forward. The rifle discharges when you close the breach. This is why I never shoot with anyone else around.

Saw about a six or seven foot snake. It did not appear to be interested in shooting, so I left it alone.

Drum of Range Scrap

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

I have a line on a 55 gallon drum of what the scrapper is calling range scrap.
One of the guys at work bought one a year and a half ago for 40 cents a pound. He is a wake-boarder and uses it to weight the boat for a bigger wake.
He tells me to expect brass, jackets, and the occasional dud round (YOW!) in the drum. He also says it'll be in the neighborhood of 6-700 pounds.

I''m thinking that if I can get it for 50 cents a pound, I should come out pretty good when I recycle the brass and copper.
I would be open to splitting this with members in the Phoenix, AZ area if they're interested.

Am I all wet here?

I think it's a sound investment.

Spending money, adding work, and reselling for more money is basically what all of us do with our lives in some form or another.

Check to see if the local recycling place will accept, cartridge brass. Mine won't. The next on down the road will.
It will be a good investment. Plan on spending a LOT of time sorting that much. Several years ago I was going to buy a full barrel of brass from an indoor range but 2 of us could not move it!. I ended up buying half of the barrel and spent HOURS and HOURS sorting it. I burned up my big RCBS vibrator cleaning all of the brass.

BTX (xtp) Universal Multi Caliber Notch Die Caliber Range

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

I thought I'd ask you swaggers and not bother BT Sniper so he could keep working on your projects.

This multicaliber Notch die has me intrigued; I'm looking for several low velocity expansion solutions.

What is the caliber range?

Will it handle 224? Smaller?

I saw that it will handle .500, but can it handle .510?

Thanks for any input.

His notching die is used in conjunction with a shell holder. I don't know how you could put a derimmed 22LR case in a shell holder to notch it. Other than that, I imagine any case used with a shell holder would work. Bigger than 50, I can't vouch for. Never done it before.
