What lever action would suit me?

For what its worth I agree with KO. I use the 22 Magnum quite a bit and I find it marginal for ?catch as Catch can? shots on adult fox.
I primarily use the 50-grain Federal Premium load. The 50-grain bullet will punch a shoulder and into the lungs when the lighter bullets will not.
I have good luck using the ?new? 35-grain Remington plastic tip load for lung shots. This load is very destructive if it does not have to punch through heavy muscle and bone.

None of the 17 rimfires I have tried are real killers using body shots. I am not a head shooter but several of my friends are and they are very happy with the 17 HRM. I primarily use the 17 rimfire for smaller ground squirrels where the rounds wonderful accuracy is a plus.

My experience with the Marlin in 357 Magnum is limited but I have a Winchester Model 94 and I am pleased with its performance. The 357 round has the accuracy for adult fox at 100-yards but for shots beyond 50-yards I would want to be sitting.
I have experienced best accuracy with 180-grain cast bullets. I cast them soft, about 14 BHN. Beyond 50-yards you need to be able to estimate distance pretty well. I use a Williams receiver sight which is slow to make elevation adjustments due to the need for a screw driver. If I had a Marlin I would drill it for a side mount Lyman reciever sight as they are easier to adjust.

Then take a peek at the LH side of the Ruger's cylinder frame.

If the frame's stamped "New Vaquero", then your correct in that it cannot take loads as strenuous as the Model 92.

But, if it's just stamped "Vaquero", it's an "Old Vaquero, with the larger frame - and can accept loads that are fully the equal of anything the Model 92 will.

All sharp-shouldered boolits, like Keith-style SWC's, don't usually cycle/feed easily (if at all) in most leverguns.

I used to use (commercial) Cor-Bon loads in my Rossi M92 .45 Colt for hunting, before I sold the rifle.
The Cor-Bons are strenuous loads, and (according to their label) are rated @ 1100fps - but IDK from what bbl length.

The only place to find a used Model 92, besides in an LGS near you, would be at a funshow or online ( in a forum classifieds ad or a gun sale or auction website like gunbroker or gunsamerica).

You're going to find that most owners selling original Winchester 1892/92's are quite proud of them, and their prices reflect it (high).
Expect to pay $700-800 for a shooter, up to $2500 or more for a pristine collectible specimen.

Most shooter's find the South Americam made Rossi Model 92 a very acceptable substitute @ $500 (new), and "whatever" for a used example.
.357's seem to bring more $$ than the .44's & .45's; all are available in 16" barreled Carbines.
The Rossi's are not as smooth as an original Winchester, but with a little love applied can be made so.

A bit more costlier (2x) are the same M92 Puma rifle, made in Italy by Chiappa (lately).

Much more nicely fit & finished, however, (IF you can find one) are the discontinued Japanese-made (Miroku) 20" bbl'd Browning B92's ( .357 or .44Mag) - basically the same rifle & maker as the current "Winchesters". (about $700, +/-, in good condition)

Welcome! I have handled a lot of recent Remlins, I mean Marlingtons, including several that were shipped very recently and I wouldn't have one as a gift - honestly. If you prefer a real Marlin, look for them used - the .30-30, .32 and .35 Rem 336s are still very easy to find used and very affordable - and the quality is THERE.

If you're really interested in a 92, the Rossis are very affordable and very inconsistent - if you are an educated buyer and can pick from several that you can handle in person, you can do extremely well, but I would not buy one sight unseen.

I agree with you, All my Marlins are real Marlins, built by Marlin. I would deffinatly look for an ; lets say a pree 2007 one. I think they sold or merged with Remi at that time. A friend of mine just bought a a 336 in 35 rem for $250.00 , great buy rifle was like new condition.

Old Rossi lever

So, my dad just bought a Rossi lever gun at a gun show this weekend. I don't know anything about them. Here is the deal. He says it's stamped, made in Brazil on the barrel, and the serial number is 000xxx
Any idea how old this thing is?

well...this is the .44 magnum auto mag....it shoots a 300Gr. cartridge, and when properly used......it can remove the fingerprints...

Well,,,,, the REALLY old Rossi Puma's had a cat's head stamped on the action flat. Look on the tang under the lever, it should have the importers name there (Interarms is older than Braztech)
