7.62x39

CZ makes a 7.62x39 model 527 carbine bolt rifle that is pretty light and easy to carry.

Reports I have read say it is a pretty good shooter.

I have a Model 527 in .223 and it is a tack driver.

5.45 or 7.62x39 Semi

Not looking to ask which is better (as that's been hashed out hundreds of times) but wanting to know if today's prices are here to stay on these Saiga's/WASR's, or if they will be going down some? I'd like to get something semi-affordable to shoot, and a .223/5.56 or .308 gun really isn't going to cut it anymore.

Thoughts?

Plus, what is a good one to buy and what are some good upgrades to look into? It's been a while since I've owned something in a Ruskie caliber.

Sig 556r 7.62x39

Really interested in this rifle, but before I commit I want to find out about ammo options.
What type of ammo runs good in it, wolf, silver bear, surplus ? Last edited by e-mishka; Today at 11:34 AM.

lapua brass 7.62x39 !? why so costly..

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

i shoot winchester brass and wonder why some regard Lapua brass so highly , is it really that good , last i saw on swapping and selling it was 125.00$ for only 200 new brass thats over 50c each , am i cheap or what ??.... somebody straighten me out , and oh yeah norma brass too ........ what up ..
Lapua is probably the best brass on the market, but being made in Finland, it's pricey. Same thing can be said for Norma brass made in Sweden. Unless you demand match grade accuracy, you should use something else. When looking to shrink group sizes in my 6.5x55 for hunter class benchrest shooting, going to Lapua brass cut group sizes in half...but for normal 7.62x39 plinking? ...overpriced overkill

Have you checked new Winchester 7.62x39 brass? I had to trim all of the new WW 7.62x39s because the mouths were visibly out of square. My CZ-527 had numerous misfires with new WW cases, but none with Lapua or fired and resized WW cases. It seems that their shoulder is set back too far, so caused ignition problems in my rifle (and other CZ-527s as well).

For an SKS or AK, I doubt you would notice.

Seems like all the brass in that cal is very pricy in these times.

If a m1 garand is a battle rifle if you dont go in battle , then a sks can be a hog rifle if you ain't shot no hogsHa Ha exactly! It's the intent. I call mine a "deer rifle" even though I have not yet shown it a deer. Maybe this year.
Both my AK's are .3085" ... I size to .311

badbob, the nose of that bullet doesn't look like it hit something sharp like the chamber edge. It looks like it hit inside the chamber rear section hard and at an angle.

PS: I've got a hog-huntin', fish-catchin' camping trip coming in a few days, for a few days, and due to truthful criticism, I must admit, I'm taking my SKS instead of the Contender I had planned to take. Headed out in the morning for a scoutin', firewood draggin'-up expedition.

Perhaps the Yugo is in some way unique compared to other SKS variants? Perhaps the type of magazine makes a difference? Perhaps your load cycles the action at a different speed than the ammo that I tried?

I have noticed that the Yugo guns often need a little more powder to get them to cycle compared to other guns. Also, I noticed that the surplus Yugo ammo seemed a tad on the warm side.

Something must be different somewhere. I'm just not sure what it is yet.

Nice write ups by the way Junior.

ps ny bushboy If a m1 garand is a battle rifle if you dont go in battle , then a sks can be a hog rifle if you ain't shot no hogsThe majority of M1s in existence have been carried into battle. They were also designed specifically for use as a battle rifle. The majority of SKS rifles have not been fired at hogs to the best of my knowledge. Not calling a M1 a battle rifle is just plain silly in my opinion. Calling a SKS a hog rifle leaves more room for debate, but once it's been carried while looking for hogs, it has earned the label far as I'm concerned.

I took a close look at my SKS chamber entrance and compared it to badbob's photo. There's two differences: (1) the little ledge/shelf below the entrance is closer to the entrance on mine; and (2) my entrance edge is distinctly chamfered on the bottom half of the entrance.
i also enjoyed your article '' the metplats tale '' great article thanks junior you should write a book , i would purchase it .. ps hope you may christen your yugo with a nice porker , i found out the original 311041 by lyman is .227 on the metplat the Noe is 180 a big difference in feeding , so i will shoot the Noe to report its flight and accuracy , i thought there was a larger dent in the metplat now i know why ... best wishes on the hunt , and write me a book ... your articles are exellent

I have a little Charles Daly Mini Mauser on 7.62x39. Haven't tried it with heavier bullets, but I like the 31141. Now I need to test it in that rifle.

Can someone give me a good starting load for that?

I am alsodoing a small ring mouser that Steve Bowers from our board built for my 9 year old Ithas a 308 barrel and i will need to start loading for this one to so any advice is good advice.

Start at 14.5 gr 4227 IMR, and work your way up
15 gr 4227imr great load drops brass 1-2 feet from my rifle works action 99% of the time if not all ..never had a failure but was a little too close for comfort .i would like it to throw brass a little further so i wont exp a stovepipe jamb ..

can you get a picture ? thanks bobI'll try.
Lee C309-150F (160gr) is my boolit of choice in my CZ-527. I have shot 311041 and Saeco #315 and they group well, but the Lee gives me better groups, higher velocity, and less recoil in this flyweight bolt action.

M4 is AR platform?

That Lee bullet shoots well out of my CZ527,too, I think my bore slugged .310 if I remember correctly. Lee bullet shot well enough in that little rifle that i didn't do much load development.

that ought to hit em hard , nice looking boolit

FreeChex III for 7.62x39 and for .308?

I sent Charlie an email, but maybe you guys can help me out a bit. Can I use the same gas checks for both .308 and for 7.62x39? I realize that one is .309, and the other is .312.

Will the gas checks made for .312 swage down to fit on a .309 bullet as well?

Can I use a .309 FreeChex III for .312 bullets? I'm not sure what they end up as coming out of the tool. I assume that they are a bit oversized so that they swage onto the base of the bullet slightly when sized.

I'm trying to avoid buying two FreeChex dies for basically the same caliber.

Thanks

One Mold Good for both 7.62x39 and .30 Carbine?

Trust me, I've got a point towards the end.
I see you needing two or more molds, but you don't have to pay for them.

Thanks to some great folks here, I'm getting back into casting after a 20+ year hiatus.
While casting today I started calculating how much I'd invested and how many boolits I'd have to make to amortize the equipment. The figurative slap upside my head was that only the cost of the lead and lube matters. Every piece of equipment could be resold and I'd still have my boolits.

My advise to you is slug your bores, purchase an appropriate mold - cast several thousand boolits and then sell the mold. Repeat as necessary.

IMR-4227 for cast 7.62x39

Hello folks!

So i've got some IMR-4227 powder right now, and figured I would see if I can load it into my AK with the boolits I just cast. (See here: http://castboolits.gunloads.com/show...oon-of-casting!)

Problem is, I can't find anything in any of my manuals or in any online searches. Anyone have luck using that boolit with that powder? I need some starting load data...

All of it is nice shiney brass cases.
Better let someone else get it. I got too many things going right now to start with Berdan primer brass.
