shotgun for trap

At 5'2" you more than likely will need a to have the stock cut. Just how much or if at all will depend on other physical characteristics such as whether you are thin or stout and whether your arms are short or long. Should that be necessary, be careful buying a gun with an adjustable comb. Depending on how the comb was cut, it may not be possible to shorten the stock so as to fit you properly.

Before buying anything, you may wish to consult a good shooting instructor or gun fitter before buying.

Remington shotgun bead

The front bead of my Remington 11-87 is too big, too high and too bright, and I tend to shoot to low with it. I'd like to mount a a lower and less bright one, perhaps a simple Marble silver bead.

But how does the bead sit into the rib - pressed or threaded? And which thread?

Thankful as usual for your inputs - I will order a new bead when I know what I need.

Regards,

Pete

Oriental Single shot Shotgun Info

My son has just come into a long arm rifle. Upon examining it, it is a smooth bore barrel which is a shotgun. The weapon has oriental markings on the headstamp, has a rabbit ear hammer, and a pivot breech to load a single round. It appears to have some age to the weapon due to the wood being dark colored. There is not a numeral for the gauge or serial number anywhere visible. we did not take the wood off yet.

I can not post any photos, being a new member. Any information is appreciated. The weapon does not appear to be military and appears to be a 20 gauge in size.

Tactical shotgun recomendations

I have that 870 Tactical linked to above. I like it quite a bit. I don't like it as much as my Mossberg 590A1's... but it's cheaper, too.

Bud's currently has the 18.5" 590A1 w/ ghost rings in stock at $464.

http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/69320

You can get a Choate magazine tube extension to make it a flush fitting tube with an extra 2 rounds - giving you 7+1 for less than $50. With that set up, I actually prefer the 18.5" over my 20" 590A1... but in stock configuration, I prefer the 20". Both are great guns though.

I run a micro red dot on the 20" and have the ghost ring version in the 18" as linked to above.

I really like both Remington and Mossberg. I prefer Mossberg controls.

VP Joe Bidens tactical shotgun techniques

I can't think of any situation where warning shots are justified.

If you'll remember some one took Uncle Joe's advise and dumped a couple rounds through his door when he had prowlers.

He was arrested for reckless discharge of a firearm. This was VA I believe.

As to his advise on the shotgun. Just his comment was made I was asked about it in my Ladies Self Defense Class.

To answer I brought in a shot gun and rifle (AR) and had them shoot it to make up their own mind.

Every one found the rifle was easier to use. I'll admit it was the recoil of the shot gun they found objectionable. Non-of the ladies had fired an AR before this occasion. It tool less then a minute to shoot them how to put the magazine in, use the safety and get the rifle into battery.

I don't recommend any type of firearm, I believe in providing as many types as possible and letting the shooter decide what is best for them in their situation. For my ladies class, none thought the shotgun was for them.

'Shotgun Joe' refuses to go quietly into the night.

"Shotgun Joe" may be crazy, but he's not stupid, He knows full well that the gun control issue is done.

I believe what he is doing, is trying to draw some of the fire away from his boss, and all of "The big O's" pet scandals, he knows if he fires up the anti-gun control crowd, we will again flood the house and senate with the same phone calls, E-mails and letters as we did before.

The investigators will be side tracked away from Obama, maybe enough to let him run, OR they will stay focused on Obama, and maybe Joe can slip some form of gun control in the back door.

Trust me when I say, "He knows exactly what he is doing".

Want to buy a shotgun.

Old Yesterday, 10:25 AM Old Grump's AvatarLocation: Little hut in the woodsWhen was the surgery, how old are you and how are you doing with physical therapy. What is your experience with shotguns? We have nothing to base a recommendation on. It took me 2 years after rotator cuff surgery at the age of 60 and was restricted to 20 gauge for a year but now handle 10 and 12 gauge just fine. My buddy went through the same surgery but developed Bells Palsy so is out of the shooting game forever, everybody is different. __________________

Did it come with a manual of operation? If so, read that. Depending on the source of the manual, reading it could be a trial.
It sounds like the gun has fixed chokes. If so, when you remove the forend and release the barrels (once the forend is off, move the lever on the top of the receiver to the right and the barrels will be released) turn the barrels over and there should be data stamped into the bottom of the barrels. Some of this is proof info. Part of it, though, should tell you the choke for each barrel. If you cannot interpret the marks, you will need to re post with that info. Or buy a choke gauge.
Some very common choke set ups for SXSs especially Coach guns are CYL/CYL, F/M, F/F.
If there was a suggestion not to fire Buckshot through the left barrel, that one is probably Full choke. The other may well be Modified choke.
How many triggers does the gun have?
The biggest complaint that I have read about is that the gun is stiff to operate. Thorough cleaning will help that.....especially of the interior parts. Using the Gun will also help to loosen it.

Is a rifled shotgun still a shotgun?

In the game laws of NY State, a rifled shotgun is a shotgun because it doesn't use metallic cartridges. If it uses metallic cartridges and it's rifled, it's a rifle.

http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/28182.html

One person claims that in NY the game laws consider a shotgun with a rifled barrel to be a shotgun, but the criminal law says it is a rifle. New York criminal law doesn't distinguish between shotguns and rifles. They are "firearms".

New York Penal Code 265.00

§ 265.00 Definitions.
As used in this article and in article four hundred, the following
terms shall mean and include:
1. "Machine-gun" means a weapon of any description, irrespective of
size, by whatever name known, loaded or unloaded, from which a number of
shots or bullets may be rapidly or automatically discharged from a
magazine with one continuous pull of the trigger and includes a
sub-machine gun.
2. "Firearm silencer" means any instrument, attachment, weapon or
appliance for causing the firing of any gun, revolver, pistol or other
firearms to be silent, or intended to lessen or muffle the noise of the
firing of any gun, revolver, pistol or other firearms.
3. "Firearm" means (a) any pistol or revolver; or (b) a shotgun having
one or more barrels less than eighteen inches in length;
or (c) a rifle
having one or more barrels less than sixteen inches in length
; or (d)
any weapon made from a shotgun or rifle whether by alteration,
modification, or otherwise if such weapon as altered, modified, or
otherwise has an overall length of less than twenty-six inches; or (e)
an assault weapon. For the purpose of this subdivision the length of the
barrel on a shotgun or rifle shall be determined by measuring the
distance between the muzzle and the face of the bolt, breech, or
breechlock when closed and when the shotgun or rifle is cocked; the
overall length of a weapon made from a shotgun or rifle is the distance
between the extreme ends of the weapon measured along a line parallel to
the center line of the bore. Firearm does not include an antique
firearm.

Alliant shotgun powders in CF rifle cases

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

When they start to become more readily available again, I want to start shooting the slower Alliant shotgun powders in my .30 and .35 caliber rifles (and a .24 or .25 if I should ever find one).

Question is, of the following list, which ones have you tried and found to work well:

• Blue Dot (I've had some good experinces with this one in the '06)
• Pro Reach
• Steel
• 410

...and, how do they rate against ol' 2400?

Thanks,
MJ

It's not about gun control, it's about people control. The progressives are using terrorists and the insane to further their agenda. If the socialist news media wasn't complicit, we could sit back and watch Fast & Furious and Benghazi-gate unfold.
only one i have ever heard of and used on the list is the steel powder.
it is a bulkier less temperature sensitive blue -dot.
it's all an educated guess,,,, till the trigger is pulled.

the more i find out about shootin boolits, the more it contradicts everything i ever learned about shooting jaxketed.

I use B D at 19.2gn in my 7x57 for the 160gn bullet at 1900fps and in my 6.5 Gm with 9gn under a 123gn bullet for 1750fps and even use it in my 20 VT for a sweet little under 200 yd rabbit load where 9gn gets the 34gn Nosler bullet away at a very decent 2700fps.
21gn Red Dot gets a 350gn bullet to 1500fps and great plinking fun but have also taken a number of goats with this load.
A 7x57 and a 404, all a man needs anywhere,anytime,ever.
only one i have ever heard of and used on the list is the steel powder.
it is a bulkier less temperature sensitive blue -dot.Tell us about your experiences with Steel.

I made links to Alliant's webpages describing Pro Reach, Steel and 410 just for those who haven't yet heard of them.

i have only used it in the 44 mag 45 colt and the 30-06.
it just shoots like anything else.
nothing weird or spectacular it doesn't meter worth a darn.
it makes some sweet steel shot loads though.
it's all an educated guess,,,, till the trigger is pulled.

the more i find out about shootin boolits, the more it contradicts everything i ever learned about shooting jaxketed.

I use the steel in the 30-30 for plinker and CBA postal matches, also buckshot, slug, squirrel, and turkey loads. I bought 5lbs of it a while back because I thought I was going to get back into duck hunting. I ran out of 2400 while testing and never restocked on it (darn), because it did well in the 30-30. So I tried the steel. In my experience, trying to come close with a load with burn rate charts it seems to be a bit faster than the 2400 in reality from what the burn rate charts imply. To where as I have got close to 1" groups at times with about 19 gr of 2400, I could only put about 14 gr of steel in the 30-30 94, (think). In my opinion it has to be weighed or dipped. I don't know what your expectations are but here is only one example. There is really not a whole lot of data for it in cartridge cases though. I think I have been having lube problems in low vel loads and WW alloy castings, but that is another matter.

Blue Dot and Green Dot in the 223 are great all the way from 22M levels to full house. DO NOT DOUBLE CHARGE . See Accurate Reloading Forum data lists for more. Simply amazing!

BvT

Basically, I'm looking for an Alliant 2400 backup/alternative without going to 4759 (the latter of which, I have plenty).

Right now I'm using WC-820 in my 358W which is working pretty well (also works in the .350RM!) but every now and again I get a clinker over the chronograph that makes me think there's probably a better substitute available; therefore, my interest in shotgun powders which should work better at 20K PSI and under. I don't recall using much 820 in the '06 but it has proven to be a good choice in the 30-30 at 1600-1700 fps. I think GD, RD and Unique are a little fast burning for my intended use which is .25-.35 caliber hunting weight boolits (PB and GC) at 1300+ fps. I like the idea of Alliant 410 which is a flake powder designed for the .410 shotgun.

MJ

It's not about gun control, it's about people control. The progressives are using terrorists and the insane to further their agenda. If the socialist news media wasn't complicit, we could sit back and watch Fast & Furious and Benghazi-gate unfold.
I too use Alliant Steel as a replacement for 2400. Its close to the same burn rate but is a flake powder so the same weight charge better fills the case to a higher density.
I have been using it in 211 FB, 22/250, 6x45, 6mm Rem, 308 Win, and 30/06.
I have been doing a lot of rather long range shooting to 550 yards with a 308 loaded with 20gn Steel and a 200gn NEI DD boolit. It clocks just under 2000 fps and has given groups of less than MOA at 100 yards. Average extreme spread was 16 fps. It holds pretty consistently at about 2 MOA to the longest ranges I have been shooting, 550 yards. At that range it is no big deal to keep a bowling ball moving if the wind will cooperate and a bowling ball is maybe about 1.5 MOA at that range.
The only draw back is that Steel does not meter well but 2400 will. I shoot weighed charges of Steel but the results seem worth it.
I was wondering about the 410 but for me it was for use in 44Mag and 45Colt. Another thread used 20/28 and found it almost identical to Unique. Email to Alliant confirmed the burn rate similar so that seemed like a good swap to me.
Bullshop,

That sounds pretty good to me.

The ease of metering attribute is something I can live without. If I need to put ammo together quickly (by saving powder handling time) I always use #9 anyway.

Thanks,
MJ

410 is interesting but I've heard some "rumors?" contradicting Alliant's claim of "Consistent performance in any weather".

Is there such a thing as a "Lee Loader" for shotgun shells?

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

I usually roll crimp, but i would like to experiment with star crimping.
As i load for slugs i dont want/need a full Lee Load All or other big press just to make star crimps.
So the question is: Is there such a thing as a handtool that will do star crimps?

They did make the lee loader for 12 Gauge and others - you can find them on eBay for 35-50 dollars.
I found a lee load-all sitting in the back of the lgs for $10.
I bought a Lee Load-all many years ago because a buddy needed some shells loaded and dads equipment is still at the farm. I was surprised at how well it worked so I've been using it for 25 years. It would be neat to find a 12 gauge Lee Loader or better yet 20 gauge just to have them.
"A person cannot exercise their right to speak freely if they have been stripped of their ability to defend themselves and repel those forces who would seek to quell their speech." Me
I have a Lee Loader for 12 ga. and bought it new about 35 years ago. Not sure if they are still available but as mentioned, the Lee Loadalls work pretty well and are not expensive. Not as portable as a Lee Loader though.

Also, rereading, yes, Lee at least used to make plastic star crimp starters in 6 and 8 fold. I have both and again, they are about 35 years old. You just put them over the case mouth and whack with a mallet.

I have not seen any in years and haven't checked the site but I doubt they still make them. You could probable buy MEC or other press mount crimp starters and mount them in a tube to whack with a hammer. That should do what you want. In fact, if memory serves the Lee Loadall crimp starter is double sided so that could be mounted in a tube and give you both crimps.

Having said that I picked up a MEC Sizemaster press pretty cheap them a MEC 600 Junior for $25.00 (and with lots of accessories!) and I love them them. I use both for shotshell and slug reloading.

Different strokes!

Yes! rockymountaincartridge.com makes just such a critter (lee loader type that is)...for both brass and plastic shells of any gauge. Not sure about the star crimper. You could just glue in an overshot card like you would for brass shells...
Thanks for the link to Rocky Mountain Cartridge. I'm liking Lanes products

Yeah and the rocky thing is for brass and the other dont state whether it is star or roll.

Paco's dont do star and SlugsRUs is rollcrimp.

So we are further nowhere now.
I did do some searching before asking you know

I'll have to do my own, thanks guys.

I have a "Lane Loader" kit for the 410. The double duty kit with tubes for both the 2-1/2" and 3" length shells. It works as well or better then the original Lee shot-shell loaders but unfortunately has the same two problems that the original Lee Loader had. Namely it doesn't size down the brass base of the shell so reloads can only be sure to work in the same gun they were fired in originally (original Lee Loader for shot-shells had same problem) and the crimping cone for making star crimps is a simple tapered cone and you have to use your finger nail to push the inside corners of the fold crimp in to get a decent looking crimp (early Lee shotshell loaders had the same problem but some of the very last ones made included a star crimp setter unit that usually is the first thing lost out of the old sets).

My Lane loader set is for plastic shells with fold crimps and 209 primers. He also sells sets for mag-tech brass shells that use large pistol primers. There is a way he could also sell a simple extra add on for his sets consisting of two pieces that would allow the user to size the brass bases of the hulls and I've been meaning to e-mail him with that info (worked it out myself as a custom made add on to his kit) since I think others would probably be interested in it as well but haven't got around to it yet.

Also, at least as of a year or more ago the instructions that came with the Lanes Loader kits were just old photocopies of the old Lee Loader shotshell instructions of which the Lanes Loader is a modern improvement on and aren't that informative and you kind of got to figure it out yourself (not hard to figure out how it works yourself at least not for me).

There are a couple of 12G Lee Loaders on ebay. Typically, post to US only!

The first reloading tool I bought was a Lee Loadall Junior, which I still have. Instructions are here: http://leeprecision.com/cgi-data/instruct/LOADALLJR.pdf

The crimping is done in 2 stations; first a reversible (for 6 or 8 star) nylon tool starts the crimp, then it goes into a simple stopped tube which finishes the crimp. I can take some pics if you like.

Parts for this tool are no longer available.

The Loadall instructions are here: http://leeprecision.com/cgi-data/instruct/LA1088.pdf

I reckon you could get the bits and pieces you need to make a hand crimper by cannabalising the Carrier http://leeprecision.com/carrier-12-ga.html

Good luck!
