$1,190 for a Leupold Mark-4 12-40x60 Tactical Spotting Scope, Front Focal Duplex Mil-

Own the same Mark 4 spotter as used by the US special forces.

The LEUPOLD Mark-4 12-40x60 Tactical Spotting Scope, Duplex Mil-Dot Reticle (67180) utilizes a front focal Duplex Mil-Dot Reticle so the spotter and sniper can estimate range at any power setting. Powerful, with bright, clear optics, it's also supremely rugged and waterproof. It's for all these reasons that the Mark 4 spotting scope is highly prized by hunters and shooters everywhere, as well.

A question of scope.

Neither is a high-quality optic; having said that, either one may very well give you good service for your particular uses. When I choose between inexpensive scopes, I usually choose the one that seems clearest/brightest to my eye and go with it. I recently chose a Bushnell Sportview 3-9x40 a rifle I bought had on it over a Simmons based on that criterion, and so far, so good.

As for accuracy of adjustment and durability, those factors are always a crapshoot with inexpensive scopes -- the scope may hold zero and last forever, or be a goner after a half-dozen rounds.

4x scope or open sights... help me decide

If I went with the peep sights, how do they mount on the gun? Can I remove my factory sights and put the peep sights in their place or is there drilling involved? The Marlin 336 is already drilled for receiver sights. (every one I've ever seen is already drilled and tapped for receiver sights.) Look on the left side of the receiver, toward the rear. You should see two small holes with blind screws. Those are the holes for a receiver sight. WIlliams and Lyman sights are built to mount on those holes.

If those two holes aren't there, then you've got the four holes on top the receiver, where you mount scope bases. The rear two holes will also mount a receiver sight. You may also have two holes in the upper tang. Those holes (present on some older rifles) are for a Marbles-type sight.

I'd bet that your rifle is already set up for a peep sight. All you have to do is choose which one. Personally, I like the Williams FP sight.

AR scope mount question

As far as mounts go, this will get you started- http://www.maxicon.com/guns/optics/one_piece/ar15_onepiece_mounts.htm

Scopes are another story. The simplest thing is figure out what you want your rifle to do and get a good scope with the appropriate magnification. Keep in mind that it's MUCH easier to get too much magnification than too little. If you're looking at two scopes in the same price range, go for the one with fewer features and better optics. When I'm looking for a telescopic sight, I start with Leupold and work my way up from there. I've tried cheaper scopes but they are gone because of their inferior optics. I have a couple of economy Leupolds that have been in use for years.

As far as the front sight base goes, you have two choices-
1) Get the scope high enough that the center of the reticle is a little higher than the FSB. Many folks will tell you that you won't see the FSB in the scope. That may be true, but if the FSB blocks the center of the reticle, you'll go crazy trying to make precise shots. It will prevent you from lining up the reticle on the target.
2) Cut down the FSB

However, the easiest solution is to get an Aimpoint red dot sight

How About a Scope With This Much Clarity?

Here is a "street" camera photo of a gathering in Canada. The camera is Govt. and military and is not available to the public. 2100 Mega Pixesl!!!

Does anyone have a scope with this much resolution? I sure don't. You can zoom in on any face in the crowd as clear as a bell. Only near the distant rear of the crowd do faces get a little fuzzy.

Now, see the "Canada Post" building? Look at the windows at the lower right in the building. Zoom in. Faces of the crowd, reflected in those windows. can be seen with clarity. Amazing.

If you have a mouse with one of those rollers between the left and right click buttons, that scolls pretty good.

Norinco M14 Clone with a scope

Here is my latest project:

Fake M14 real 308 bullets. Thank Norinco!!!!

My Chinese M14 build.

Fun gun to shoot! Only issue is a few FTE as the mount hangs up brass. My last project was rebuilding a Lee Enfield No4 to full wood. Next project is new furniture and some light work on my 1897 Winchester. Then refurbing a 586's sights.

Night vision scope

Welcome to the shooter's forum, glad you joined us. I have little experience hunting at night other than spotlighting coons, so will refer you to people more knowledgeable.

Might check out this thread too to see what developes.

Remington 750 scope mounting issues

My uncle brought a Remington 750 in .243 to sight in at my back yard range. Took a few rounds and figured out the scope if pointing skyward. Ran out of lower elevation and still shooting 3' high at 50 yards. Irons are dead on. Set the rifle up in my rest and put a .22 cal. range rod down the bore and leveled the rifle from there. The scope mount rail screwed to the top of the receiver had to be elevated 5/32" to make it come in level with the bore. Are these rifles just made this way or is the barrel out of whack to the receiver that much? We called Remington and they are sending a packing slip to send the rifle back to be checked out.

Is there a scope base that can be adjusted that much? At that much elevation for the rail I'd have to mill off too much of the rail to get it in line with the bore.

Next question, anybody know the twist rate for this rifle and what ammo would be a good bet for it?

Thanks

Used scope questions

Since you are not looking for a lot of magnification, I would suggest you look at a red dot scope. Maybe like a TRS-25. Those kinds of scopes are really easy to use and trouble free.

I put one on a friends Buckmark and she is happy as a clam with it. My son and I have essentially the same thing from Sig/Sauer on our Buckmarks.

I took the plastic rear sight base off the gun and mounted a Tactical Solutions aluminum base with the integrated rear sight. Have the gun sighted in for both irons and the red dot.

It is a nice option for the gun.

Help picking scope

...look through a bunch of scopes.... Best optic advice ever!

IMO, the market has incredibly good scopes at most price points....

Sure <$50 or names like Leapers and Barska are generally pretty crummy, but other than that, there are a lot of very usable scopes. I find I like Simmons, even though they are cheap. Simmons has made some gems in Japan, but even their China scopes are good enough for most people.

I find under $200ish, my biggest complaint is the effort to zero the scope. Then forget about turning turrets! That would have the repeat ability of wing shooting a rifle!

I find at $300 or so, you get really good mechanicals with decent glass.

At $700 or so, mechanicals, glass and features are pretty good.

The really high end scopes have the best of all, are purpose built and have good durability without extreme weight.

These are all very general points..you can find deals like most Simmons, Super Sniper, Weaver T series, earlier Burris XTR, etc which are real gems.

A YouTube guy Nutnfancy has an hour on mid range AR optics which shows some gems and isn't too far away from good hunting scope advice.

Reading glasses? and a scope? OK

Reply

Old Yesterday, 07:18 PM Cool Reading glasses? and a scope? OK Today I had one of those rather bizarre revelations, a few days ago I had my 57th birthday, yes I'm not impressed with the golden years. As I was taking a scope off the black powder rifle to put on my RR Predator Pursuit, I was of course wearing my reading glasses, I had a Weaver K4 to go on the old smokepole, and a nice 60s or so Redfield 4X that I was going to put on the RR just to get some glass on it, as I'm not well set for buying glass at present. I have been shopping for new scopes and was almost ashamed with how bad the glass was in those two old scopes, I was attempting to level both reticles and low and behold the glass wasn't bad at all???? OK, I get them all mounted and take off my reading glasses and they are suddenly lousy again????? hhhhmmmm Of course the Redfield doesn't have enough diopter adjustment to compensate, but I don't wear glasses for distance vision, and my last DOT physical produced 20/15 vision??? sooo, where does that leave me, I don't want to wear reading glasses when I hunt, the range might not be so bad???? but, does anyone know if newer scopes would have enough compensation in focus to bring me up to speed??? The new glass I have been shopping Leupold, Redfield, and Nikon seem nice and bright, but now I'm wondering??? billymagg Reply With Quote Old Today, 05:09 AM Tnhunter's AvatarMight depend on how you are adjusting the ocular to "match" your vision? Most recommended method I've seen is to use a bright, clear sky (not looking towards sun, of course) and adjust to make the crosshairs most clear while pointing towards the sky. Most anything else will give you a focused reticle at one certain distance, perhaps making it appear out of focus at many other distances. Some say a blank white wall (without any detail) can also be used.

I'm about your age and have been wearing "readers" for years and have still been able to focus any new scope and all of my older Redfields, Lymans and Weavers using this (these) methods. The idea of needing to put on "readers" before taking a shot while hunting seems problematic to me, even though it would likely work OK while shooting at the range.

Good Luck!

Lost my scope turret caps...

Most all manufacturers will give, or sell replacements at a reasonable cost. This isn't that uncommon. I've had the damaged caps, or bought used rifles without them in the past. Never dealt with Vortex, but have never paid for replacemnets in the past from others. It is a long holiday weekend. Don't get too impatient. I'm betting you'll hear back fromthem later this week

Which Scope???

I don't know why I'm answering this. I have no help to offer.
That is a tough choice.

Either way, you should be good until it's it's way too dark for deer hunting. You could lose the reticle on the Zeiss while you could still the deer, so I'd go with the illuminated dot on the Leupold. I think.
