I am thinking about getting one of these. I think I have read some info on here about this boolit. I haven't been able to find it though. What do y'all think about this boolit in the 38 special. I am thinking it would be a great plinking slug out to 25 yards or so. I see there are a lot of loads for it but what are some of your favorites. I am inclined to use Bullseye, Unique, or 231.

I have tried this boolit in the 9x21 imi glock 17 loaded with 4.5 grs of imr 700x, 25 meters is very precise. I love it and I also bought the mold with 6 cavities.

io ho provato questo boolit sul 9x21 imi in glock 17 , caricato con 4.5 grs di imr 700x ,a 25 metri ? molto preciso .mi piace molto e ho comprato anche lo stampo con 6 cavit? .

this is my test, for 357 May do not really like.

questa ? la mia prova , per 357 mag non mi piace molto .Name: image.jpg<br />Views: 70<br />Size: 54.0 KB

I use this boolit in 380, 9x19 Luger, 38 spcl, 357 mag and 358 wcf - has always wanted to shoot well for me. I'd say buy one.

http://leeprecision.net/support/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/377/3/online-lee-distributors

Several have it in stock but watch the shipping costs

I shot that boolit extensively when in a PPC league indoors over ~3gr Bullseye. That is my favorite boolit for my 6" S&W Model 14. Over 5gr Bullseye it would shoot sub 2" at 50 yards from a rest......back when I could see the sights.

Only problem I've had with the six cavity 358-105-swc is that as it gets hot the sprue cutter seems to warp a bit and it casts a bit of flash on the base. It works great with the Lee pro 4-20 pot because you can set the guide bar so you don't have to hold the full mold weight while you're casting.

Basically you can look on NOE's site (arent any) or you can go to Tom at accurate molds, he can cut a 5 cav for about 150 and will help you design the boolit, send him in a sample and I am sure he will copy it.

Josh

I was considering making an interest thread for a group buy mold for a clone of that CE Harris boolit in a brass 4 cav.

NOE has a similar design that I might look into as well.

Get 2 more 2 cavity moulds and work them in tandum. Almost as fast as a 6 cavity mould.

SAECO #382 3 cavity refurb help needed.

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

Rescued these at the flea market today($15), brought'm home and cleaned them up. Exterior banged up some but cavities are in excellent shape. However the blocks have a little play in them - I suspect I need new aligning pins (?). Blocks don't close completely either and I see sunlight at the interface - could they be warped?! Sprue cutter present. All other parts need replacing - where to get handle screws, pins etc.? Thanks!

Transfer the pins from the male side to the female side, the holes may be waddled out. Inspect the mold faces for burrs around the pin holes and other places and also look for lead splatter on the faces.

6 cavity WC - Finally a bad experience with Lee

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

I have had great luck with lee products, and really haven't had anything bad to say about them, I have many molds of many makes with quite a few Lee molds in the mix, BUT...

I recently got a new 358-148-wc 6 cavity mold, new production (the alignment pins are different, they are using the slightly smaller ones that come on the new 2 cav molds) and when sizing the boolits from it I noticed that the crimp groove was nearly disappearing. I measured a few unsized boolits and they measure .364!! I am using straight COWW, with no tin added, --- ridiculous.

Try dropping your melt temp somewhat and see if that'll help. What are you sizing them to? The .358?
Assuming you did everything right, then Lee Precision will "FIX" it by replacing the mold. Have not seen complaints of that mold casting so much over spec.

I thought that a hotter alloy would experience more shrinkage upon hitting the mold, due to greater heat loss.

Please correct me if I am wrong

PS try sizing them to 360 if you can. My lee 148 wc drops at 360 and they shoot great as-cast

I size them to .359. I haven't found a revolver yet in which .358 shoots better than .359, and only my older S&Ws like .360. I have an older Lee 2 cavity that drops at .360, but this new mold is ridiculous, and I've tried varying the temp, lowering it only brought them down to .363, high temps took them up to .365. Like I hinted at in the OP, I think it may be a symptom of how new it is, I don't know if quality has gone down as they rush to meet demand, but my old 2 cavity drops nice .360 boolits, so this one is going back.
I've had some issues with the alignment pins in my new 2 cavity 452-230-2R... I fixed it.. but I think it was because it was "rushed"... Still how can I complain for the price?

Just give up and send it back to Lee for a replacement. They will cast with the one they send you to verify it casts to the correct dimensions. You can try to work with your mold temp, etc and get some variance, but .005 over specs is way too big unless you have a specific need for that .364 boolit. Lee is a good company that sells decent molds. They serve a big need in the casting/loading world (the people who can't afford the top of the line) and they serve that market well. I have tried to get by with an out-of-spec mold and it is just too much work (culling boolits, sizing in two or three steps, etc). Besides when you size a bullet down from .364 to .358 take a look at how much less lube the bullet holds. Than can be a factor when the lube grooves are marginal to begin with. For the price of the mold (as you pointed out) it is hard to expect every one of their molds to be perfect. Especially when they will always replace it for the postage it takes to get it them.

Good Luck

Yeah their QC is probably over-stressed and feeling pressure to churn out the molds that people are trying to buy. I mean, how many molds can Shirley thoroughly inspect in one day?

I guess the alloy temp issue is still sorta out for debate. Maybe aluminum molds are the exception to what i swear the manuals told me: hotter alloy produces smaller boolits. But the alloy content and mold temp have effect, i just found this old thread that makes me wonder

http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?104800-Impact-of-alloy-temperate-and-mould-temperate-on-bullet-diameter

Yours still seems way too big though

I mean, how many molds can Shirley thoroughly inspect in one day? Now that right there is funny,I don't care who you are!

I don't own an assault weapon. I own a counter-assault weapon.

You might be able to sell that mold for as much or even more then you paid for it to the right person that needs a wadcutter mold that casts that large. I'd say list it for sale in the for sale section of this forum clearly indicating that it casts that large.

New lee 6 cavity .45 acp from Titan

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

Bought a lee 6 cavity on line at Titan reloading.
It is a 230 grain truncated cone for .45 acp

I was originally planing on getting a mold from accurate molds for this design, but it was available so I jumped on it.... When I got it there were several left if anyone wants one.

I also bought a lee hand press, my girl friend liked mine so much she asked me to get a second one!! Can't complain about that!

I just got my Breech Lock hand press from Titan. Really liking it. I'm waiting for a couple few molds from Titan.

Can the lee 2 cavity mold handles be removed?

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

dilly is online now Boolit Man Join DateFeb 2013LocationMissouriPosts79

I just got a Saeco 315 but have no handles and it's kind of hard to find them. I have a few of the Lee 2 cavity molds that come with handles. Is there a way to somehow remove those handles and use them for the saeco? If this did work, would it ruin the Lee mold, or would it be removable like it is with other mold designs?
They can be removed by taking an exacto knife or similar and cutting out the crimp that holds the pins in. You can then invert the mold and spill the pins out leaving the handles loose. Lightly tapping the base after the pins were reinserted would allow you to reuse that mold. I do not know if those handles would work on a SAECO mold even if you had to adapt them. I would guess that the nose is too short but that is a guess. At minimum the holes would need to be repositioned and the handle materiel might need to be thinned or shimmed. I would invest in SAECO handles or the Lee handles for 6 cavity and remodel those if it were me.

Fair price for Lyman single cavity 358495

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

$40?

To me a single cavity pistol mold is worthless. I shoot too much ammo to not have a 4 cavity mold.

well,
just last weekend i bought a used single cavity round ball lyman mold that
it cost me $20, it did not include handles.
On fleabay single cavities are going for $40 and up right now. I've seen them up to $85.... Way too much and more than they cost new..................

I only buy singles if I'm going to have it hollow pointed............

I bought two-cavity 358495 without handles for $25, about a year ago. Today, for a single-cavity with handles, I'd pay no more than $35.

Though I do have a single-cavity rifle mould, I wouldn't buy one for handgun use -- too much time and work involved for a too small pile of boolits.

$35 is the price. Maybe not worth it.

Thanks everyone.

new lee six cavity mold

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

Ok guys here is the deal I just ordered and got a lee six cavity 148 grain dewc .358 mold for my 357. ? TIME how do I get it ready to make BOOLITS.
Clean it with solvent or soap n water. I used a dremel buffing wheel w/ jewlers rouge on my cavities & then clean it again. Drops boolits now without issues. Been using 2 cycle on spruce plate n pins. Someone with more experience may have other ideas.
Please don't use a Dremel tool inside the cavities of your new Lee mold.

That aluminum is awfully soft.

If you have problems with bullets sticking and not falling out freely, there are other ways of taking care of this other than using a Dremel tool.
