lubes for molds

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

just wondering what everybody uses to lube their molds after a session of casting? I would like to use wd40.
Do not lube mine at all, takes too much effort to get them clean again before the next casting session. Just put them in an air tight container with some silica dessicant, which once a year gets reactivated in the microwave oven.
Do not lube mine at all, takes too much effort to get them clean again before the next casting session. Just put them in an air tight container with some silica dessicant, which once a year gets reactivated in the microwave oven.Same here.
Change? Not this type. Can we just have a refund?
I don't lube my moulds after use either, unless they were being put away for long term storage, because of the need to get them oil free for use next time.

Mine just sit on shelves in the boxes they came in the unheated garage which is my casting workshop. I have never had and rusting rusting issues and I'm in the damp UK.

Except for long term storage, I don't oil 'em down; when I do, I don't use WD-40. I happen to like WD-40 but for iron alloy molds I use a good gun oil.

When I cleaned the Cosmoline out of my Garands (cleaning kit storage hole), I kept it. I've used some of it for really long term iron mold preservative. As far as I can tell, it works just fine.

"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.", old Chinese proverb.
No oil, ever. I spend too much time and effort getting them clean to just put it back when I am done.
I bought a couple old Lyman iron molds at a estate sale a couple years ago. Ed Harris or C. E. Harris who wrote the NRA Cast Bullet manual and supplements recommended that I just coat my iron molds with a light coat of USP Mineral Oil for storage if rusting can be an issue.

There is no need to clean the mold before casting as the mineral oil burns off cleanly as the mold is preheated on a hot plate before casting leaving no residue and only producing a wisp of white smoke as it burns off. I've used this method for years with no issues.

Too much trouble to clean. If you need to store so they won't rust, try a sealed ammo can with dessicant.
Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats. H.L. Mencken

Does anyone know the turnaround time to get a pistol mold from Mr. Farmer? I heard 12 weeks but so far have been waiting around 23 weeks.
That was what I was told back on 08 and after 6 months I contacted him to be told it would ship that coming monday. Was told the same thing for another 3 or 4 months and by the time I got it there was 10 months or more gone by. Beautiful mould but dont expect honesty from Mr Farmer as it dose not seem to be his nature. And to top it off the top punch that was ordered and payed for was not with the mould.
A 7x57 and a 404, all a man needs anywhere,anytime,ever.
Dave Farmer made three molds for me. I ordered my first mold in the early 90's and I waited nine months. The other two molds were ordered in the late 90's and early 00's. They came into my hands within a few months. I think the quality of the molds were excellent but I had to learn patience, which can be trying at times.

223 molds

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

greetings all. pretty new to the site post wise , but I have been reading quite a few posts . so I have been looking around and have a question or two I can not seem to find a definitive answer to.

. I was looking to cast a bullet for 223 application, and was looking for something that was profiled like a 55 gr FMJ. All I see in the way of current production molds is something like a RCBS 55 SP mold with the flat on top, or a round nose configuration. Now I did see an older lyman 225450 ( I believe it was lyman ) that is pointed, in an article beagle wrote about the 223 that was really close to what I am looking for , but no one seems to make them anymore . why is that ??

second question is from what I have read it is more difficult to cast anything under 30 cal , so how much difficulty does doing a 223 bullet with a point make it?? does the point create fill out problems within the mold ?

thanks
charlie

The first questions the more experienced fellows are going to ask, is the application for an AR, or single shot/bolt gun, and do you know which chamber you have? (NATO 5.56, .223, or Wylde.)
i'm going with it being an AR [it always is]
just get the rcbs mold.
it's all an educated guess,,,, till the trigger is pulled.

the more i find out about shootin boolits, the more it contradicts everything i ever learned about shooting jaxketed.

(NATO 5.56, .223, or Wylde.)actually it is for both and AR and a bolt gun. AR is 5.56 and bolt is 223 wylde. Please trust me and do not take this the wrong way , as I do not want to sound like a smart ***, but what difference does the chamber or action type have to do with the questions I asked ??

1st question was why do MFG's not make a pointed bullet mold for the 223 anymore, or do they and I just am not able to find it through searching? Second question was about difficult the profile could or would add to the casting process.

just get the rcbs mold.your quote of [ it always is ] seems like I may have annoyed you with my question some how . sorry if I offended you with my questions.
I did some research and found answers to most of my questions, and thought I was asking reasonable questions about the casting process and difficulties a design might add, as I do not have any real experience in casting. I did not want to be the newbie that asks the same question every week, like what mold works best and did not think I was . I know the RCBS will work along with the NOE and a few others, so I was not asking what is best or anything like that

Please trust me and do not take this the wrong way , as I do not want to sound like a smart ***, but what difference does the chamber or action type have to do with the questions I asked ??Because some of the molds available for .223 bullets have a profile that usually only work properly in 5.56 or .223 wylde chambers. Some bullets may not feed reliably on an AR due to the bullet profile. As for the cast bullets not being pointy like FMJ I would say some of the reason may be do to cast .223 bullets needing to be sized and often times gas checks added. You could distort the bullet easier if it was pointed.
Who knows why Lyman switches designs? I would be no new pointy molds because they are not easily cut on a lathe or mill.

Pointy bullets shouldn't be too difficult to cast. Easier than a HP boolit for sure.

Were you trying to get a high BC boolit?

I never thought to cast for a AR platform... I thought there were problems fouling the gas tube. Is that internet legand?
pointed cast boolits just don't do well at any kind of velocity.
they fly very well and are super accurate just not at velocity.
you have to take the design into consideration and the unsupported nose is affected by issues inside the barrel and then more problems in flight ensue from the damage.

cstrickland:
I wasn't trying to be patronizing, or condescending.
the 22 cals are a whole nuther ball game when it comes to cast.
they aren't like flinging lead from a 44 mag or a 30-30 at velocity there is a whole lot more to them.
you don't just make some boolits, pick off the couple of wrinkly ones and go to shooting.
unless 3" groups at 50 yds at 16-1700 fps is what you really want.

it's all an educated guess,,,, till the trigger is pulled.

the more i find out about shootin boolits, the more it contradicts everything i ever learned about shooting jaxketed.

To add to what runfiverun said about being limited velocity wise a pointed cast 22 cal because of its small diameter would have a very week nose that would bend easily in a semi feed system. In order to avoid this the olgive would have to be very short so the profile would be much shorter and more blunt than FMJ bullets of the same weight.
Pointed boolits are no harder to cast than any other but pointy boolits with long efficient olgives are very limited in velocity to maintane accuracy. Add the semi auto feed system and you have two strikes against you from the start.
cstrickland is online now Boolit Mold Join DateAug 2012Locationnortheast ohioPosts9
runfiverun thanks for the feedback. I wold not have expected that the nose would be that susceptible to deformation in the barrel or loading. my initial thought would be a hard cast bullet would survive that process. I can understand once it is deformed it wont shoot for nothin !!
yeah from what I read itty bitty 22 are difficult at best to cast , and no I would want to get more accuracy than that.

glad I didn't offend as I am just here to learn , and start doing some casting.

I never thought to cast for a AR platform... I thought there were problems fouling the gas tube. Is that internet legand?John I have personally never shot cast in an AR so I can only relate what I have read, that being said there are several guys that I have read about that are or have done it. read the post in this link and you can see even after 500 rounds leading the gas tube is not an issue http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?156326-AR-15-500-Round-Cast-Bullet-Test .

Also Google " 223 why grown men cry" it was written by a member here from what I read, and it has a lot of excellent information on the subject.

you can not push it as fast as a standard bullet. I am hearing around 2400 ish max with a gas check but I can live with that. Considering you can cast a bullet and gas check it for near nothing , but the time you have in it is really appealing. On that note though I also read the small bullets are more difficult to cast.

Thinking of ordering a Mold from Accurate Molds

My rifle likes the LEE C312-185-1R
I size them to .311 because my rifles throat is .310
So how does this sound ?

31-195R
Body Diameter: 0.311 (+.0015, -.000)
Bullet Weight: 195 grains
Gas Checked: Yes
Intended Firearm: 1903A3
Special Notes: Bore ride diameter .301 (+.0015, -.000)

Fixed that for you, his tolerance range is 0.0015" not 0.0010" so he can't guarantee to hit 0.301 to 0.302 just slightly too narrow of a window.

Make sure you select the alloy you are using or the closest thing in his drop down list to what you are using. He adjusts the tolerances for the alloy you select so if you ask for a mold to drop 0.311 (+0.0015 -0.0000) from typemetal alloy and then you cast with WW alloy instead it may not hit the tolerance range you specified because the alloy itself can make that much difference. I usually specify WW alloy and then if I want the boolit a little bigger I can always spike my alloy with a little more tin and antimony to push the diameter up a thousandth of an inch or so.

Tom is a master craftsman and he will do his best to give you what you say you want. Just be sure you really want what you think you want.

Cleaning Aluminum Molds

Hey guys,

Tried to search something up but could only come up with stuff that regarded the first clean.

Anyways, I've doing around 6-7 casts on my Lee 2C molds and on the inside you can see little brown tinted lead or maybe just dirt. Anyways its too hard to just wipe off with a towel and don't want to scrape at it if I don't need to.

Any type of brass wool or something that I can use on Al molds?

Thanks in advance, sorry if asked prior.

Sell my molds?

I do not think you will get enough for two Lee molds on E-bay to pay for a custom mold from Accurate Molds. Unless you got a 6 banger in a very popular caliber, the Lees are not bringing that much money. Now if you have some older Lymans, RCBS, or H&G in the right caliber, you can get very lucky on the price they end up selling for. Now is the time to sell your unused molds on E-bay. I have sold two in the past month and got well over what I paid for them new years ago. Some of the real popular calibers are 22, 9mm, 38-357, 44, 45 acp, 45/70 that sell real quick on E-bay.

That's only $2 shy of one of Tom's 4 cavity brass molds. Now if PayPal wasn't holding my money I would be able to purchase one. If you don't sell on eBay regularly then expect to send your item out w/out being paid for it. I will not be using eBay ever again.

Boolit Molds an Star Dies

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

Ghost101 is offline Boolit Bub Join DateMay 2012LocationSoCalPosts39

Hi everyone, Hope all had a great Easter.

Need some help with mould an sizer die sizes. How much larger do I want to order my boolit molds over my bore size or chamber sizes in my revolvers? Next, what size do I need to order for the sizer dies (Star). Do I want to order a boolit mold larger then chamber size in order to size it down to the correct size? And if so, how much larger?
For an example; I have a .500S&W, (this is the gun that started me with casting in the first place). Chamber size was .500. Bore size ranged from .500-.501+. I enlarged the chamber size to .502 . Haven't hand lapped the bore as of yet. Leading with this was beyond believe. Hopefully all this work will change this into a fun to shoot an easy to clean gun.
My cast boolits with my low vel. calibers are workin great with TL an Lee sizers. Wish I had done tho years ago as the cast boolits have given me much better groups on paper. Thank Y'all for the help with getting me started.
But before I start with my mag. and rifle casting, I need info on the size question.

503 would be recommended.
502 would work just as well.
it's all an educated guess,,,, till the trigger is pulled.

the more i find out about shootin boolits, the more it contradicts everything i ever learned about shooting jaxketed.

Ghost101 is offline Boolit Bub Join DateMay 2012LocationSoCalPosts39
Thank you runfiverun. So I'll order a .503 mold from LBT an a .503 sizing die from Lathesmith. I read the sticky by goodsteel a little bit ago, it helped out a lot with my questions for my .30 rifles, I think, lol. I am so hooked on this casting thing. I don't know anything, but having fun with it.
that's the point, it is to keep right on shooting.
we may or may not save money at some point.
but I know I can shoot and go hunting no matter what everybody else is doing.
it's all an educated guess,,,, till the trigger is pulled.

I just saw that Grafs had some RCBS molds in stock so I ordered a .38 caliber 158 grain SWC GC and a .44 240 grain SWC GC . If they shoot well they'll be off to Magma to fit to my Master Caster that is on order.
Anybody use those molds?
I use the 44 mold.
I use the lyman 429241 for most everything in the short 44 mag, but when I want to ramp up to the 445 I use the rcbs gas check mold.

Noe Molds for 223 Remington help picking one

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

I have decided to cast for my AR and wanted to know which mold would you

gentlemen suggest I pick up for a stag arms 1:10 twist 18" barrel. I was looking at the

noe 70gr rn and 62gr fn both GC. I have read great things about the rcbs mold but

none are available and the noe version is also sold out. Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Planing on sizing to .224 with lee die or should I size to .225?

Thanks Mike

I have NOE's RCBS 22-055 FN. I'm still learning about it but it plays nice enough in the rifles I have used it in. If you have to have it to play with this weekend (yes, they ship that quickly) and don't want to wait for the RCBS to come back in stock, I would bet the other molds will work as well.

I would suggest sizing to .225. I would also strongly suggest you polish out the Lee die with some 400 sand paper wrapped on a dowel or rod. If you start with a more coarse grit, you can open the Lee die to .225 and then make it nice and smooth inside with the finer grit.

I wish I could say I've fired some of my NOE boolits. After a gas check and lube, I'm weighing my 55gr FN's right around 62gr. They look nice, I can't wait to see how they shoot.
there's some info in this thread

My Stag upper feed the NOE 55 just fine w/22 grains of 748. I just started loading that bullet, and I only loaded to see function. I think i can maybe lower the charge a little to function.

Accuracy - minute of paper plate @100 yards - off hand and a Eotech sight.....

It's relatively easy to slug or get a cast of your AR chamber, ask someone to send you a few "as cast" 22 Cal. bullets, be sure to show some good manners and insist in re-paying them for postage. I'm going to guess it will be .226 to .2265. Knowing the throats Dia. will be a better starting point that just starting at .224 or .225.
Since you have a 1-10 twist and IF you are interested in shooting past 50 yds. consider the NOE MX-3-62 gn., Mine weights 63.3 lubed w/ GC

+1 for Sharp Shooter USA molds

Hello everyone as you can see I'm a newbie to this site but, I have been lurking quite a bit and reading everything I can.

A few weeks ago a buddy and I rounded up every wheel weight local shops would sell us and decided to start casting. Now I've never cast so this was truly a new adventure.

I was pleasantly surprised that Sharp Shooters USA was quick and easy to deal with. They told me it would be 2 weeks and on the money it was 2 weeks.

Today I cast for the first time. Not near as hard as I thought and I turned out 11.5 pounds of .31 cal buckshot.

Thanks to everyone and I promise I'm sticking around, this is kinda addicting.

Oh those frickin molds have to be blazing hot to produce good shot. I mean WOW hot.

Thanks, Jason
