What makes the 30-06 less accurate then the 308 or any other round for that matter .

.

IMO, "Bart" is full of horse-pukey.

In 1963, when he said the .308 put the .30-06 out to pasture, the .308 had already been around for 8-9 years - So if it was so much better, howcum it took so long ?

The .308 has an advantage over a .30-06 in only two areas:

1) It can be chambered in a short-action rifle, making that 1/2" shorter action (etc) a tad lighter to tote around.

2) When looked @ by the military, the smaller round (.308) meant that a soldier could carry more rounds of ammo for a given weight - a premium in battle.

The .30-06's I've owned/shot (about 10, over the years) all shot slugs heavier than the .308 can handle (220grs) with accuracy & aplomb.

FWIW, I've owned 4 different .308 Ruger M77's and 2 Ruger M77's + one #1 in .30-06 - and can tell you that the Ruger .308's shot groups twice as wide (at their best) as the Ruger .30-06's (one of which would go 3/4" @ 100yds w/factory 180gr ammo anytime I wanted).

most accurate .35 wadcutter??

Im just now gonna revisit the 38 special, cause i found a 8.375 inch model 14.Think i will have some fun!!

Anyways, was wondering what peoples opinion is on the most accurate wadcutter for the 38? Lyman makes many shapes and weights. Why did they make so many? I have a 358091,,how does this rate amongest the herd?

Also have a 35887,,that weighs around 120 grs, compared to the 091 that weighs 146,,,,will this lighter weight boolit shoot as good as the heavy one??

I realize that all guns are different, but am just wondering about this subject.Im thinking about buying a 4-5 cavity to use instead of the 2 hole 091. Looking for opinions on which one to buy..

Accurate loads for 125 9mm boolits?

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

pergoman is offline Boolit Buddy Join DateJul 2011LocationHarrisburg,Pa.Posts72

I have several different molds that throw 120-125 gn. boolits including the Miha hp, Lee tc, and Lee rntl. I also have several thousand #377(125 tc) cast tips I couldn't resist from Wideners. I have yet to find a load combination that pleases me as far as accuracy goes. I am still trying because I just know it is out there. I have just about every powder known to man, a Ransom rest, a range 1/2 mile from my back door, and more than half a dozen different 9mm pistols. I have Jword loads that work great and 105-119 grain cast tips that work great.
I am not concerned about making a power factor so velocity doesn't matter as long as I can get them to function well. I am a competitive bullseye shooter who knows what I can do as well as what each gun is capable of. These loads are meant for less demanding shooting games such as steel, PPC, etc. 10 shot 25 yard groups as big as a fist just don't cut it for my needs, especially when the guns will print 10 into 2" with other loadings.
Any recipes are appreciated
Here's some loads that work nice for me. They are the Mihec 359-125 HP shot from a Ruger SR9c. WSP primers, COL is 1.096. I shoot at an indoor range, so no 25 yd groups and you are likely a better shot than I. The sizes below are 5 shot groups shot offhand at 8 yds.

4.8 gr AA #5, 0.59 inch
4.0 gr HP-38, 0.78 inch
6.3 gr HS6, 0.50 inch
6.6 gr HS6, 0.74 inch
3.3 gr Clays, 1.08 inch

I am in the process of working up loads for this boolit using CCI #550 primers (I am kinda short on SP primers and am saving those for 380 Auto). Hope this info is useful.

The guns will print 10 into 2 in. Whats the problem??? How did IMR 7625 do for you?
5.5 grains Alliant Power Pistol; 4.8 grains Ramshot True Blue. PP is a little faster, TB is a little cleaner, both are good loads for my guns. You need to work up your own if you use either.
"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.", old Chinese proverb.
Disclaimer: The above is not holy writ. It is just my opinion based on my experience and knowledge. Your mileage may vary.
In my experience, too many powders leads to too much experimentation.
My current plan is one powder at a time and one average load with three +/- .1 grain variations on either side of the average I find in manuals. If one of those seven loads isn't a winner - then it's time for another load or another powder.

Soon to order Accurate Mold. What size will it drop with my alloy?

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

IdahoFireman is offline Boolit Mold Join DateApr 2013Posts7

I am going to be ordering a new mold from Tom at Accurate, and wonder if any of you have experience with different alloys and the size at which they drop. I will be pouring 92-6-2 alloy exclusively, and am not sure of the differnce relative to his WW spec for size and weight. Any imput would help, I dont want to have order two!

Thanks,

Tell him what lead you are using and he will make it right. There is a section on the ordering process that asks what type of lead you are going to use. Put it on there and you will be OK. If not send him a email and ask.
Cane_man is offline Boolit Master Join DateMar 2013Posts287
it will drop exactly how you order it...
Every mold I've bought of Toms dropped exactly where i wanted it to.
i'd just go with the ww alloy spec anyway, and take the whole extra .0005 in stride.
it's all an educated guess,,,, till the trigger is pulled.

the more i find out about shootin boolits, the more it contradicts everything i ever learned about shooting jaxketed.

I have the same question. Of course I want to order to spec for what'll shrink more, so I NEVER have an undersized bullet. I don't mind sizing down what'll shrink less.

i cast in ww+2%tin, WW, and soft lead + 2% (give or take). Which do you guys recommend ordering based on? ww+2% will shrink the most, yes?

i'd just go with the ww alloy spec anyway, and take the whole extra .0005 in stride. That's what I do also.
the added lead alloy will of course come out smaller.
you can order the molds with a plus spec.
get it cut for ww's [the 50-50 with 2% is the same as ww alloy straight for all purposes] but get it with the .0015+ specification.
so if you want 452 [or more] order 452 and plus.
you'll get 452 [on the very smallest end] with the soft, and up to 454 with the harder alloys.
it's all an educated guess,,,, till the trigger is pulled.

the more i find out about shootin boolits, the more it contradicts everything i ever learned about shooting jaxketed.

Funny thing. I'm also using 92-6-2 and told Tom I wanted my 45-70 bullets to drop at .460 with that alloy. It drops perfectly at .460. I'm a happy camper.
There is a 'notes' box when ordering for you to specify your alloy. Tom takes it from there, i think, and will deliver a mold dropping at your requested diameter. What ive experienced dropped within +.0003" or pretty close to that.

If you wanna play it 'safe' like i did, request a diameter a little larger than you need and you can size them down to ensure roundness. Probably not really needed though

Casting Accurate Mold Problems

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

As you can see by the picture I have a problem with one cavity of my mold. I need some help on what I can do about it. I have tried heating it up an wiping it down but it has not helped. I am new to casting and I am sure there are some lessons I have to learn. The mold dropped good bullets at first but now I have small indents in one bullet of a 4 cavity mold. I am not sure how to clean a mold and start over.

If it were me I would take it apart and scrub the heck out of it, hot water with dawn does a pretty good job, use a stiff tooth brush, dry it good and maybe use a bic lighter to O so very, very little smoke, get it up to temp and have a ball.
A good heavy scrubbing with rubbing alcohol and a rag or a toothbrush often helps clean out oil or grease that you can't see with the naked eye. I like to follow the alcohol with a detergent like Dawn, as mentioned above, and hot water, and then making sure to dry the mold with a rag before starting again. Sometimes with a multi-cavity mold a particular cavity may be the one that consistently drops the poorly formed bullets in a given session. Sometimes the cause is not a dirty cavity but an improperly heated cavity, and this can be corrected by filling the cavity that is not filling out well first.
By the looks of the bases, if your using a down pour pot, try pressure casting. I have to do that to all my Accurate molds in the 45-70, to get my bases to fill out.

I start out by boiling my molds, any mold, in water with a few drops of Dawn dish soap. I'll let them sit in this water that i brought up to boiling and pulled off the burner for a good 5 min. Scrub with a nylon brush, toothbrush ect ect, rinse and repeat. I boil the water a couple of times and do this to make sure all oils get out of the pours of the mold.

I would look that cavity over with a magnifying glass.
I bet you know exactly which cavity it is because the boolits are hanging up in it.
look for a little rolled over or dinged area right on the two drive bands.
it's all an educated guess,,,, till the trigger is pulled.

look for a little rolled over or dinged area right on the two drive bands. There does seem to be a sliver right at the drive band. What would I do to remove it? All the bullets seem to hang up.
+1 on cleaning it.
I use carbe cleaner, or break cleaner.
Ok now that we got that out ofthe way.

Excellent mold from Accurate - but need some help

I tried searching for answers, but everything was too general. Ill try to describe the situation as thoroughly as possible.

Got my new Accurate 453-200h. It is an h&g68 clone, for 45 auto, 4 cavity, brass. Two words: love it. Not sure if i can go back to my lee molds, but heck i still gotta get my rifles fed.

Now that i realize how awesome and consistent boolits can be dropped from a mold like this, my QC level has increased significantly. I am rejecting a lot of boolits that are better than ones i formerly shot. Why? Because now i see the real potential. Maybe ill loosen up if i dont see a marked difference in accuracy or leading.

So it baffles me why one cavity is so resistant to produce perfect bases when the other three are so gal-darn consistently muy perfecto!

Here is what i have done:

Upon receipt of molds, i cleaned them well with warm water and dish soap. Rinsed very thoroughly. Hand dried with paper towel. 30 minutes later, i set the mold halves on my flat-surfaced hot plate (no coils on top) at the same setting i use that melts beeswax in about 15 minutes. So i figure maybe 180-200 when the stat finally kicks off? I didnt want to warp them, but i thought a few heat cycles would be good.

Did this three times, letting the blocks slowly cool to air temp between each heating.

Finally attached the handles as the pot was warming. Applied a light coating of lucas semi synthetic 2-cycle oil to the mold faces, alignment pins, and sprue plate bottom.

Once the pot was up to temp the mold needed a lot more heat than i am used to with my aluminum molds. Wrinkled boolits for a bunch of pours. When i got the mold to temp, out dropped the best looking boolits i have yet cast. Excellent bases, sharp features, desired diameter, proper nose profile...what more could i ask?

Well unfortunately the cavity closest to the handles does not get the same consistent base fillout as the rest. When i use a routine that gives me perfect fillout in the first three cavities, i get about 80% reject from cavity 4

Ok i tried starting my pour at cavity 4, no difference. I added a little tin no difference. I bumped up alloy temp no difference.

I poured cavity 4 as a single cavity (no lead in other cavities). Success!

Tried pouring real fast into cavity 4, tilting mold so overflow spreads to other cavities in that style. Now cavities 1&2 have incomplete bases, but 4 is good.

Tried pouring with a very large sprue puddle. Like, overflowing both sides of sprue plate and 1/8-3/16" thick when set. This worked the best but still not 100% rate of fillout in cavity 4.

So thats about where i am at tonight. I realize i could have contacted directly the mfgr but i wanted an opportunity to state how excellent Accurate Molds are, and how darned pleased i am with mine.

I further figured that the collective wisdom of this place would get me running straight without having to distract Tom from making such great molds for us.

Am i letting my mold temp fall to far? If so, why am i getting such good results out of cavities 1-3? Maybe something unique to brass molds that i dont understand?

Im ears here, i am sure this is a solvable problem. Thanks

I like the looks of this bullet from Accurate Molds. Anyone use this one for 30-30?

http://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet_detail.php?bullet=31-150B-D.png

I had him design the 31-180E for me. It is awesome!......if you're into plain base boolits. He could easily make it a gas check. Just ask.

As for the design you askd about, I'd say it'd run great.

2013 Blindfolded/Nude boolit casting tournament champion.
that's a fair copy of the rcbs 30-150 with the nose changed slightly.
it will work quite well in a 30-30.
it's all an educated guess,,,, till the trigger is pulled.

the more i find out about shootin boolits, the more it contradicts everything i ever learned about shooting jaxketed.

I have this one http://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet_detail.php?bullet=31-170C-D.png and it is working great. Still in final load development, so far so good. Does a number on gallon jugs!
Every shot you get in life counts
I use the same one as oneshot
do believe I got the very first one
been using it quite awhile excellent choice
I also have the 31-170C for Win 30-30. Works great on paper targets. Haven't had the opportunity to shoot at food yet.

Thinking of ordering a Mold from Accurate Molds

My rifle likes the LEE C312-185-1R
I size them to .311 because my rifles throat is .310
So how does this sound ?

31-195R
Body Diameter: 0.311 (+.0015, -.000)
Bullet Weight: 195 grains
Gas Checked: Yes
Intended Firearm: 1903A3
Special Notes: Bore ride diameter .301 (+.0015, -.000)

Fixed that for you, his tolerance range is 0.0015" not 0.0010" so he can't guarantee to hit 0.301 to 0.302 just slightly too narrow of a window.

Make sure you select the alloy you are using or the closest thing in his drop down list to what you are using. He adjusts the tolerances for the alloy you select so if you ask for a mold to drop 0.311 (+0.0015 -0.0000) from typemetal alloy and then you cast with WW alloy instead it may not hit the tolerance range you specified because the alloy itself can make that much difference. I usually specify WW alloy and then if I want the boolit a little bigger I can always spike my alloy with a little more tin and antimony to push the diameter up a thousandth of an inch or so.

Tom is a master craftsman and he will do his best to give you what you say you want. Just be sure you really want what you think you want.

Which "Accurate" Mold for my .300 Blackout?

What do you plan to fire them from? AR? Bolt gun? Handi Rifle?

I can't remember the mold number, but my dad has an accurate mold he uses for a .30-06 bolt action. I made some .300 dummies of that 175is grain boolit and couldn't get them to feed in my AR.

I haven't modified my feed ramps, but I see online where some have to accommodate a wider meplat boolit.

Most accurate gun

I have an X-Five as well ( the L-1 model ) and they are incredibly accurate ! ( mine is in .40S&W )....

but I have 3 other guns ......a pair of Wilson's that will hold that 1" group at 25 yds bench rested too ....right along side the X-Five I have...

....and a Freedom Arms single action, large frame, 5 shot - that I had made in .357 mag - with a 4 3/4" barrel about a yr ago ...with a full action job on it and a trigger that breaks right at 3.5 lbs ....that will outshoot the X-Five L-1 model ...and both of my Wilson's....by a little bit ( not a lot --- but 1" at 25 yds doesn't take much for me to get off the mark, even bench rested, a little bit )....

a single action revolver...is a very different beast.../ but even double action revolvers in single action ...can put together some tight groups out there..so not sure, its fair to compare them to a semi-auto...

but I like the Sig X-Fives a lot ...and I keep tinkering with the idea of picking up a 2nd one in 9mm ( one of my Wilson 1911's is a 9mm as well ...and I shoot the heck out of that gun every week ). Somedays, I have trouble even feeling "average" but all 4 of these guns make me look better than I am that day !

Just about to fire up the melting pot. Anyone else use this design before?
Haven't used that design, but Tom's molds are great aren't they? I know you'll enjoy it.
Not that one but my 30cal mold is awesome. I will be ordering from Tom again in the near future.

Don, let me know how that mold casts. Got several of Toms molds, you might be interested in one for your 475 Linebaugh I've got. Can bring it over some weekend and let you cast up a few on it.

Give me a holler when you get time and we'll get together and do some bsing and casting.

This is a knock off of the Lyman 338320, it drops at .342ish. Going to size to .340. Nice mold and cast nice and easy.
Would probably work well in my .338 Federal also.

Nice looking bullet.

Yet another fine Accurate mold

It is 360 125T the only reason this mold is not brass is because I did not pay for it. Technically it belongs to my boss, He buys the stuff and I load the stuff and get to keep 50% of what I load, and he buys the lead as well.

It seems to me that once the brass mold is up to temp, it holds the temp a little more constantly. The down side is the weight. But they make awesome bullets and are easy to work with, so for me I prefer brass.

Does any one hear have experience with the accurate 45-325E? I am considering it for a Rossi 45LC and an old small Linebaugh in the same caliber. The two crimp grooves are appealing so I can seat for function in the rifle and closer to the throat in the hand gun.

They are at the most .0003 out of round, very impressive. And the boolits just fall out of the mold when i open it,Bands are razor sharp, and the bases are dead square.Cant tell ya how happy i am with this mold, but i think you can tell!!!!

New Accurate Molds 36-170 (variation on 358429 theme)

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

Here is the new Accurate Molds model 36-170J that Tom just drew up for me. It is a variation on the 358429 style designed for my old S&W .38/44 Outdoorsman long-action revolvers made in the '40s. These 170 grain bullets will be a bit long for the short-cylinder S&W Model 27 and 28 guns if crimped in the groove ! I will play awhile before I get a 4-cavity version !

I will post bullet photos next week to compare this to some of the Group Buy versions that were run.

Jerry, what is the difference from the NOE versin of the Keith bullet?

Thanks

if there is one I would bet it is the nose is slightly differently shaped.
Gerry's looks super strong.
i'd also bet it would feed pretty well in a lever gun.
it's all an educated guess,,,, till the trigger is pulled.

Nice looking mold. Nice looking boolit. That would fit nicely in my GP100. I have a 358429 from the eighties that my gun likes.
OK. . .it's a longer nose than Tom's 36-170K, which I've been assuming to be a straight clone of the original 358429 Keith.

I'm guessing you're doing this to take more lead forward of the mouth of a .38 case to make room for powder?
