lee slugs

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

I am trying to work up a load for lee 1oz slugs that I cast from stick-on ww and when I weigh them after casting they don't even weigh 7/8 of an ounce. they weigh 360 grains on my rcbs scale which converts to less than 7/8oz. am I doing something wrong? also I am using RIO 2 3/4 pre primed hulls and mec78t4
wads (they are a replacement for WAA12L) with 20 grains of green dot. the loads all crimp good using a star crimp (I do not have a roll crimp tool) I have only loaded 3 shells to see what they looked like and haven't shot them yet. I am doing more searching to make sure the load will be safe and the slug weight has me worried.
My Lee 1 ounce slugs are actually coming out at a couple of grains (insignificant) over one ounce using clip ons. Their overall length is .635+/-". If yours are significantly shorter, then I'd say someone put a 7/8ths mold in a 1 ounce mold box. Diameter wise, mine come out at .679 to .682"

You may want to check the accuracy of the scale with a known weight.

I just checked the Alliant Reloading Guide, and while they didn't list the Rio hull, I'd imagine its close enough to the Fiocchi straight hull that for all practical purposes the data should interchange. It doesn't look like you could get hurt with the combo you're loading if your scale checks out. With 1 ounce of fine shot it is supposed to be around 7,900 psi. A slug will make less pressure, and a lighter slug less still. Worst case, it won't make enough pressure and will make that BLOOP sound instead of a BANG.

Wildlew,

Do not let guys like Pipehand drive you away. This site is full of helpful people.

If PH knew the answer, he would post a reference. I am with you. The only way I can see a slug giving less pressure is if the slug/wad are a loose fit in the bore and then accuracy may suffer. If the slug/wad are a "good" fit, I would not expect much difference. If the fit is tight, pressures will be higher. So saying a slug gives less pressure is not correct in every case.

Didn't mean to be a pill guys. I thought a solid projectile would give higher pressures too, but it turns out that the shot column actually exerts more outward force on the barrel and makes more pressure than a reasonably well fitting solid projectile. Does it sound counterintuitive, yup.

Haven't bookmarked the references to support that, but there are a bunch on this site, and some over at Shotgun World. I am not the shotgun guru here, but I have read the posts in this subforum going back to the beginning. There's a lot of good info. I sure don't want to "drive anyone away".

Look for posts by Turbo1889, Longbow, Videomemories, Blammer and others with shotgun experience much greater than mine. I suggest you type in "shotgun slug pressure".

Lee Slugs (Both 1 & 7/8) and .690 Round Ball

+1 for Lutnit's advise.
In order to get accuracy, you need a snug fit travelling down that whole barrel!

Make sure your barrel is not paper thin and if you can push it through with 6 to 12 lbs pressure you'll be ok with a modern gun .

resizing cast slugs???

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

As VdoMemorie suggests, if you are using multiple size sizer dies, that are significantly different in diameter, you will have to make up appropriate push through rams. Getting maximum contact with the edges of the slug bases avoids slug damage in sizing. I got away with only two. One for the .723 and .730 dies for the foster type slugs, and another smaller ram for the .673 and .679 dies used for the Lee Key Drives.

I'll look and see about that press... Hopefully it makes sence for me. Thanks for the suggestion.

Good morning MossBergman, if you are only doing it to fit Lee Drive key in a pertecular wad for a snug fit then perhaps just one sizing die will do!
You will not only require a strong press but also have the press mounted on a solid table and then all your weight to push it through based on your alloy!

This hobby is suppose to be fun, you might be better off buying better choices of wads, instead and the good wads are a bit hard to find specially when you need them!
1. Win.AA12F114 with the thinnest petals, but hard to find.
2. Fed.12S-3
3. Win. AA-12
4. Fed.12C-1, hard to find.
5. Fed.12S-4
6. Fed.12S-0, petals thick.
7. Trap Commander, thicker petals.
8. Hornady Versalite, very thick but good for overbored barrel.
and this is how they fit before modifications, like adding a nitro card and cutting the wad petals short etc:

Please do not buy the replacement wads as they are usually very crappy, I would not touch them with a 10 feet pole!

Hoping it helps.

Ajay

No, what I ment was the ram has to be very close to the die diameter, or you will not get maximum support on the edges of the slug when forcing through the die. The bases of the slugs are hollow, with only about 1/8" around the rim in contact with the surface of the ram. With too small of a ram, the edges of the slug will shear off when being forced through the die. I found that I could get away with one size ram for the .673 and .679 dies. but I need a larger size for the .723 and .730 dies, to keep this from happening. If you are doing just the Lee, you will only need the one ram to size the slug.

Ajay, I'm starting to look forward to your posts awsome information and pics... jam packed with good info. Thanks

I realize as an alternative to resizing the slug I could just replace the wad with thinner pedals

Question:
1. Which peddal do you think would work with the lee slug snugly in a standard federal shotshell?
2. Do you know os any place that would send you sample sizes of wads... I would need a handful of differant pedal thickness to see which one works best then would place a bulk order. I would even be willing to pay for the samples. Otherwise i would be ordering wads and having to return them. which seems silly to me.

Thanks again!

7/8 oz lee slugs and red dot, how fast can you go

Okay then, I had a look through 4 or 5 books and several other load sources and while I have a lot of slug loads using Unique, I have almost no info for Winchester AA hulls!

The best I have is:

From Lyman Shotshell Reloading Handbook 4th Ed:

- Hull = Win AA 2 3/4"
- Primer = Win 209
- Powder = Unique @ 28 grs.
- wad = Win AA 12 (with petals cut off for Lyman Foster slug)
- Slug = 1 oz. Lyman Foster
- crimp = roll
- Pressure = 10,400 PSI
- Velocity = 1383 FPS

This same load is used with 4 different wad columns and all run within 400 PSI.

From Alliant site (several years ago):

- Hull = Win AA 2 3/4"
- Primer = Win 209
- Powder = Unique @ 34.5 grs.
- wad = .135" card + 0.25" Fiber + (2) .135" card
- Slug = 7/8 oz.
- crimp = roll
- Pressure = 9,800 PSI
- Velocity = 1,570 FPS

From BPI:

- Hull = Win AA 2 3/4"
- Primer = Fiocchi 616
- Powder = Unique @ 33 grs.
- wad = BPGS (plastic gas seal) + 1/2" hard card wad
- Slug = 1 oz. (445 gr.) BPI AQ
- Crimp = roll
- Pressure = 10,800 PSI
- Velocity = 1,560 FPS

WARNING!

1) All three loads shown are roll crimp and from what I see mostly, roll crimp develops less pressure than fold crimp I would drop charges about 10% if using fold crimp.

2) The second load DOES NOT use a plastic gas seal so if you substitute a plastic wad it will develop more pressure. So double dilema here! Both roll crimp and no plastic gas seal.

3) For the third load you would have to substitute a cushion leg wad for the wad column suggested. This would not worry me as both have plastic gas seals. Again, it uses roll crimp so I would reduce charge about 10% if using fold crimp.

I try not to make substitutions except equal weight of slug or wad columns that are similar.

I have lots of load data for Unique and 1 oz. slugs at velocities from about 1400 FPS to almost 1600 FPS but most is for large volume straight walled hulls like Activ, Fiocchi, Cheddite, Federal Gold Medal. I have almost none for Win AA as they are tapered small volume hulls.

I hope that helps.

my opinion on sabots and full bore slugs

Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets!

Living in ohio where it is shotgun only for deer. I have tried different combinations of wad slugs and sabots made for shotguns. There is just to many variables in combinations of a piece of plastic gripping rifling and being consistent every time. Maybe for a smoothbore its ok. But if you have a rifled slug gun it is hard to beat a piece of lead swaging into the rifling for accuracy. Slug your barrel and decide what diameter you need to use and order a mold. Then you don't have to worry about running out of wads or sabots. Cast bullets have stood the test of time out of rifles and pistols and they will in the new modern slug guns.

round ball alternative to slugs???

0.662" in pure lead is exactly 1 oz. but they are slightly small for standard shotcups so have to be "patched" to size for decent fit. I have gotten very good results from 0.662" balls.

A better fit for shotcups is 0.678" balls which are about perfect and just over 1 oz. Mine run about 460 grs. cast of range scrap lead.

Lyman makes both those moulds but they will cost about $65.00.

You might get a scissor mould at 0.680" from Dixie Gunworks or Track of the Wolf. They will be cheaper than the Lyman. Not slamming Lyman, almost all my round ball moulds are Lyman and they cast very well.

Lee makes a 0.690" ball mould but I have had trouble getting 0.690" to work in any shotcups I have tried. It can be done because people are doing it but you need thin petal shotcups or brush wads (cup with no petals). The 0.690" ball weighs about 1 1/8 oz.

Longbow

Oops! I forgot crimping. I have used both fold and roll crimp but prefer fold crimp with the round balls in shotcups because of the wad petals ~ they butt up against the roll crimp and can be wrinkled or bent unrolling the crimp. Fold crimp seems to work better for me anyway.
