I do not think that is the original rear sight. More than a few older .444s had their rear sights removed to accomodate scope installation (just like a good number of pre '64 M70s). My 1980 version showed up with a blank in the rear dovetail. Here are a couple of pics, showing one a bit newer (pistol grip) and another of about the same year('68) which has it's sight removed. I guess it was less $$ to replace with the simple dovetail "folder". Added: Well as soon as I figure it ain't factory, I see these pictures, showing the same sight 
So, perhaps it was factory for a short time(??)
