Sometimes the forend wood needs to be squeezed upward (etc) with one hand while the other's trying to thread the screw.
If you wipe down both the head & tip of the screw prior to installation, they are easily recolored with some cold blue apps.
JMO, but I always remove the white spacer(s) from the sling swivel QD studs for a more modern look.
Given that beauty's condition, I'd say you did OK ( In 2013 $$$, not what sombody once paid) ...................
