If you don't load your own ammo, be advised that the surplus 30 Carbine rounds are basically all gone, and the new factory ammo is pricey! There is still a fair amount of surplus 7.62x39 available for good prices.

If you reload, they are about the same cost, although the 30 Carbine is actually a bit more tricky to load for, really. In your case, I wouldn't even consider the 30 Carbine, since it's not powerful enough for anything more than small game to coyotes.
